Recently, doctors at the National Children's Hospital said they had received and treated a 5-year-old girl diagnosed with vaginitis caused by a foreign object.
More than 2 months before being admitted to the hospital, the child had bleeding and yellow vaginal discharge. The family took the child to many places for examination and treatment, but the disease kept recurring. Recently, the child's condition became more serious, and the family took the child to the National Children's Hospital. Here, the doctors suspected that the child had a vaginal foreign body and conducted a consultation with the Urology Department.

After consultation, the doctors decided to perform endoscopy and remove the foreign object from the child's vagina, which was 3 pieces of cotton, ~2cm in size, stuck tightly to the lower vaginal wall, deeply embedded in the mucosal tissue. After the doctor removed the foreign object and irrigated the vagina, the child's health condition stabilized and he was discharged from the hospital.
Master, Doctor, Doctor Vu Xuan Hoan - Department of Urology, National Children's Hospital, who directly performed endoscopy to remove foreign objects for children, said: From 2023 to now, the Department of Urology has received and treated 3 cases of vaginal foreign objects in children, the foreign objects were pieces of bamboo mats, batteries and pieces of cotton.
For vaginal foreign bodies, if not detected early and treated promptly, it will cause inflammation of the vaginal area. This condition, if prolonged, can create deep abscesses that are very difficult to treat. If left for a long time, it can even affect the child's reproductive function later.
Through the above case, the doctor recommends: For young children, especially those aged 3-5 years old, they often like to explore the world around them, especially children like to explore themselves and their bodies but do not foresee the danger. Children often insert foreign objects into their private parts unintentionally. Therefore, parents and caregivers need to pay attention to their children and instruct them not to insert foreign objects into their bodies to avoid unfortunate incidents.
When seeing children with abnormal vaginal bleeding and mucus, parents should take their children to specialized medical facilities for timely examination and treatment.
