Medical staff promote no smoking in hospital premises

As the largest medical examination and treatment facility in the province, the Provincial General Hospital currently has 700 beds with more than 800 medical staff. Every day, the hospital has about 800 to 900 inpatients and their accompanying relatives.

To build a smoke-free environment, the Hospital has implemented many synchronous solutions, specifically: establishing and perfecting the Steering Committee including members who are leaders of the Hospital, departments, and mass organizations; developing plans and incorporating the content of preventing and combating the harmful effects of tobacco into the internal rules and regulations of the unit. At the same time, thoroughly disseminating regulations related to the Law on Prevention and Combating the Harmful Effects of Tobacco to all medical staff, patients and patients' relatives. The content of building a smoke-free hospital environment is also an important criterion for quarterly and annual emulation evaluation of each hospital staff.

Departments and offices regularly disseminate information about the harmful effects of tobacco to all staff and employees. At the same time, launch a non-smoking movement in the hospital. During patient council meetings, medical staff in the departments disseminate information about the harmful effects of tobacco to patients and their relatives. Encourage patients and their relatives not to smoke in the hospital area. On average, each year, the hospital and departments and offices disseminate information at patient council meetings more than 1,000 times for about 40,000 - 45,000 people.

In addition, the Hospital has strengthened inspection and supervision work, established internal inspection teams to check, remind and strictly handle violations of regulations on no smoking on hospital grounds.

To propagate the harmful effects of tobacco to everyone in order to change behavior and habits of not smoking, the Hospital has hung more than 200 billboards, posters, signs, and regulations prohibiting smoking along the corridors, entrances, and walking areas in the Hospital for everyone to see easily. Distribute leaflets about the harmful effects of tobacco and regulations prohibiting smoking in hospitals to patients and their families, and propagate everyone to strictly comply. Place "No smoking" signs in many locations in the Hospital campus. At the same time, open suggestion boxes to propagate and promptly remind everyone to keep the hospital environment clean and protect everyone's health. In addition, the Hospital also communicates through the website and Facebook fanpage to post articles on the law on preventing the harmful effects of tobacco, thereby changing the awareness and behavior of smokers.

"No Smoking" signs are posted in many locations within the hospital grounds.

Ms. Vy Thi Thu Hang, Head of Administration Department, Provincial General Hospital said: In order to build a smoke-free hospital environment, we have proactively advised the Steering Committee, closely coordinated with departments, divisions, and organizations to organize propaganda about the harmful effects of tobacco in meetings, patient council activities; received, distributed propaganda leaflets and posted no-smoking signs in crowded areas. At the same time, thoroughly instructed the unit providing food and beverage service to absolutely not sell tobacco; urged security guards to regularly monitor and remind officers, employees, patients, and patients' relatives to strictly comply with the regulations on no-smoking in hospitals.

Thanks to the active, synchronous and effective implementation of many solutions, patients and their relatives have voluntarily complied with the regulations on not smoking in the hospital. Mr. Hoang Van Tuan (Chi Lang commune, Lang Son province) came to the hospital to take care of his relative being treated at the Department of Internal Medicine and said: While taking care of my relative, I was informed by medical staff about the harmful effects of tobacco and reminded that I absolutely must not smoke in the hospital. Therefore, I understand the importance of maintaining a clean, smoke-free environment for the health and recovery of patients, so I strictly comply and also encourage everyone to not smoke in the hospital.

In the coming time, Lang Son General Hospital will continue to promote propaganda on tobacco harm prevention and control throughout the unit, raise awareness and change the behavior of medical staff and patients, and patients' relatives to effectively prevent and control tobacco harm, aiming at patient satisfaction. Build a safe, civilized, smoke-free medical examination and treatment environment, contributing to raising community awareness and protecting people's health.
