Ho Chi Minh City In addition to being one of the four largest children's hospitals in the country, Nhi Dong 2 aims to become a leading organ transplant center.

Currently, Ho Chi Minh City has three pediatric hospitals: Nhi Dong 1, Nhi Dong 2 and Nhi Dong Thanh Pho. In addition to ensuring treatment for pediatric patients, these three hospitals are assigned the task of developing their own specialized strengths. In particular, Nhi Dong 2 was assigned by Mr. Duong Anh Duc, Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, to become the leading organ transplant center in Vietnam.

"Each hospital is assigned a mission, and for Children's Hospital 2 in particular, the assigned mission is to become the number one organ transplant center in the country," said Mr. Duc, at the 45th Anniversary Ceremony of the establishment and development of Children's Hospital 2 , on May 31.

Children's Hospital 2 is the only pediatric unit in the Southern region to perform liver, kidney and stem cell transplants for children since 2004. The hospital's organ transplant center just started construction in 2022 and is expected to be completed in 2025. In addition to a team of highly qualified medical staff and modern equipment, this place also develops many specialties such as organ transplants, cancer treatment, and neurosurgery.

In 1988, the hospital performed surgery to separate conjoined Vietnamese-German twins, the first separation surgery in Vietnam, recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Since October 2022, organ transplants at Children's Hospital 2 have slowed down due to the lack of operating rooms (the organ transplant project has not been approved), the scarcity of organs for children, and the Covid-19 pandemic disrupting international support. At this time, there are temporarily no centers for organ transplants for children in the South. Therefore, many families bring their children to Hanoi for transplants, while other parents who do not have the conditions have to bring their children home.

According to the project, the hospital will build two more standard operating rooms specifically for organ transplant surgery. It is expected that the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health will review the project at the end of this month, after which it will be sent to the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management, Ministry of Health.

If the project is approved in June, this unit will proactively take organs from adults and transplant them into children, no longer depending on other units. At that time, the hospital will be able to transplant three children a month instead of only one case as before.

In addition, according to Professor Tran Dong A, in charge of the program to establish the Organ Transplant Center of Children's Hospital 2, this place has sent doctors abroad to study organ transplant techniques. In particular, the hospital focuses on improving pediatric liver transplants with living donors, which is the most difficult technique in organ transplants.
