A group called "Dogs of Chernobyl" shared a video showing several packs of dogs, including at least one with completely blue fur, at the Chernobyl nuclear disaster site in Ukraine. This is the first time they have seen such a sight. "Last week the dogs were not blue. We don't know why and are trying to figure out what's going on," the "Dogs of Chernobyl" group captioned the video.
According to the group "Dogs of Chernobyl", although some of the dogs have mysterious and scary blue fur, they seem to be "very active and healthy". Since 2017, the group "Dogs of Chernobyl" has cared for about 700 dogs living in the exclusion zone in the Chernobyl nuclear disaster area. They provide them with food and annual medical care.
These dogs are descendants of pets left behind when people were evacuated in the aftermath of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster, one of the worst nuclear accidents in history. Within 36 hours of the explosion in reactor number 4 of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, the Soviet government evacuated about 350,000 residents of the town of Pripyat (present-day Ukraine), about 3.2 km from the Chernobyl power plant. The dogs left behind at Chernobyl survived but had varying levels of radiation exposure in their fur or bones.
Recently, many experts and scientists have conducted research on dogs that are descendants of pets that residents were forced to leave behind when they evacuated in 1986 to learn about changes in their DNA as well as to map the genes of dog populations in Chernobyl...
