Fan died in Spanish Second Division. |
The match at the Alfonso Murube Stadium had only been going on for 18 minutes when the incident occurred. Mr. Manolo Carreto, the former local police chief, suddenly collapsed in the stands. Immediately, medical staff and the Red Cross team arrived and performed emergency treatment on the spot for about 10 minutes, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
The 73-year-old was carried off the pitch on a stretcher to applause from the crowd and rushed to hospital. However, at half-time, the organizers confirmed that he had died.
Faced with the heartbreaking news, the parties involved held an emergency meeting in the locker room, and the referee decided to stop the match there. The official announcement was broadcast over the stadium's loudspeaker system, causing the atmosphere to fall completely silent.
Before the match was abandoned, Ceuta had opened the scoring through Kuki Zalazar, but Adri Embarba equalised for Almeria. The organizers said the remaining match would be replayed, most likely on November 26.
Ceuta Club posted a statement: "We are saddened by the passing of a fan during the match against UD Almeria. The entire club would like to send our deepest condolences and love to his family and friends. May he rest in peace."
La Liga's official account later confirmed and sent a message of condolence: "The match between Ceuta and Almeria has been suspended due to the tragic passing of a fan at the Alfonso Murube stadium. Our deepest condolences to the family, friends and all Ceuta fans."
