On July 18, the US-led United Nations Command (UNC) said an American citizen crossed the military demarcation line between South Korea and North Korea without permission.

According to UNC, the man had traveled to North Korea on a tour of the Joint Security Area in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and is believed to be in North Korean custody.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has voiced concern about the American citizen who “intentionally” entered North Korea and is being held by Pyongyang, and said the US military is still trying to contact the soldier’s family.

“There are a lot of things that we are still trying to understand,” Mr. Austin said at a press conference. “We believe he is being held (by North Korea), so we are closely monitoring and investigating the situation.”

Meanwhile, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said Washington is contacting Seoul to find a way to resolve the incident.
