Ministry of Education and Training "blows the whistle" on schools that recruit students with "strange" combinations

Realizing the shortcomings in recruiting students using "strange" combinations, the Ministry of Education and Training has requested all universities that are using combinations without core subjects in recruiting for specific majors such as Medicine and Pedagogy to review all of their enrollment activities.

PNVN newspaper has just published an article, reflecting on the situation of many universities using combinations of subjects that do not have a core subject in admissions. This includes special fields such as Medicine and Pedagogy.

Faced with these shortcomings, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Hoang Minh Son affirmed that universities do not seem to understand the difference between this year's admission season and previous years. In the old general education program (2006), students were required to study all subjects, so even if a school enrolls students in the Health major without using a combination of Biology, candidates still have a certain amount of basic knowledge about this subject.

However, 2025 is the first year that students under the 2018 General Education Program graduate. The new program only requires four compulsory subjects: Math, Literature, History, and Foreign Language, the rest are elective subjects. Therefore, if a school enrolls medical students without using Biology in the admission combination, it is entirely possible that a candidate who has never studied this subject in high school will be admitted.

According to the current admission regulations, universities are not limited in the number of admission combinations. However, the majors and admission combinations must ensure reliability, be able to assess the input requirements and classify the qualifications of candidates.

"Schools can add additional criteria to the entrance threshold. For example, if a school considers admission to the medical major using the combination of Math, Chemistry, and English (A01), it should add a mandatory requirement that candidates have studied Biology in high school, and at the same time set a minimum score threshold for this subject. This will help ensure that admitted candidates have a basic knowledge base in Biology, meeting the requirements of the major," Deputy Minister Hoang Minh Son proposed a solution.

The timely move by the Ministry of Education and Training is expected to help universities adjust their admission plans to suit the characteristics of each major, ensuring input quality and bringing fairness to all candidates in the 2025 university entrance exam.

Schools need to quickly review and re-evaluate current admission combinations and make necessary adjustments to ensure the goal of selecting students with sufficient capacity and passion for their chosen field of study.
