The Department of Animal Health initially concluded that the main cause of diarrhea in dairy cows in Lam Dong province was due to Pestivirus tauri infection (BVDV type 2) after vaccination with NAVET-LPVAC vaccine of Navetco Company.

The information was stated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in a report sent to Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang on August 14 about diarrhea in dairy cows in the province. Lam Dong

In a document signed by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien, according to a report from Lam Dong province, the organization of vaccination with NAVET-LPVAC to prevent lumpy skin disease in cattle was carried out from June 19 to August 2.

A total of 35,002 cows have been vaccinated, of which 25,876 beef cattle are still healthy and 9,126 dairy cows.

The results of examination, observation and discussion of clinical symptoms of sick dairy cows showed that the animals were tired, stopped eating, lethargic, had shortness of breath, had respiratory infections, were depressed and drooled. They were either immobile or lying in one place, and had obvious signs of dehydration and electrolyte loss.

Cows have fever, many have high fever over 40 degrees Celsius, have watery diarrhea and can die a few days after symptoms appear.

The working group of the Department of Animal Health conducted autopsies on 3 dead cows, collected samples from cows with diarrhea, and also autopsied 3 sick and dead cows to collect samples from a total of 17 dairy cows (12 vaccinated, 5 unvaccinated and asymptomatic).

The Department of Animal Health also took 14 batches of NAVET-LPVAC vaccine to send to the Department of Animal Health's laboratories to conduct repeated testing of a total of 51 samples to detect pathogens in dairy cows caused by viruses (lumpy skin disease and diarrhea in cows) and bacteria (Clostridium, Salmonella, E.coli, bovine pasteurellosis, Mycoplasma cpricolum subsp, Anaplasma sp, coccidia).

"Based on clinical symptoms, autopsy examination of lesions, test results and gene sequencing, the Department of Animal Health initially concluded (because currently laboratories are isolating and culturing viruses, sequencing genes and sending samples to the World Organization for Animal Health reference laboratory for accurate identification) that the main cause of diarrhea in dairy cows in Lam Dong province is due to Pestivirus tauri infection (BVDV type 2) after vaccination with NAVET-LPVAC vaccine of Navetco Company" - the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development stated in the report.

According to this ministry, dairy cows infected with Pestivirus tauri combined with Clostridium and E.coli bacteria will show more severe symptoms and are more likely to die than other cows.

Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) or Bovine Viral Mucosal Diarrhea (BVD, occurring in cows chronically infected with the virus) is an infectious disease caused by the Pestivirus species of the Flaviviridae family.

According to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), there are currently 3 types of Pestisvirus: Pestisvirus bovis (BVD type 1), Pestisvirus tauri (BVD type 2) and Pestisvirus brazilense (BVD type 3).

The disease occurs mainly in dairy cows, which are sensitive to changes in the rearing environment and weather and have weaker resistance than beef and native cattle.

As of 4:00 p.m. on August 14, 5,650 dairy cows had diarrhea, of which about 300 had died.

"Epidemic situation The disease in the dairy herd in Lam Dong province has been initially well controlled. The number of sick and dead cows has decreased sharply since August 8 due to timely and effective use of treatment regimens.

As of 4 p.m. this afternoon, 560 cows have recovered. Other sick cows are being treated and are showing signs of recovery," the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development added.
