Present at the rice fields of Dai Trach commune, we felt the bustling atmosphere of farmers racing against the weather to finish harvesting rice on sunny days. Harvesters, rice trucks, people loading and carrying rice… laughing and talking loudly throughout the fields.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyet, Ly Nhan village, Dai Trach commune said: “This winter-spring crop, my family planted 6.5 sao of rice, of which 4 sao planted ST25 rice variety and 2.5 sao planted VN20 rice variety for livestock farming. Due to the impact of the weather, this year's rice yield decreased compared to last year by about 0.2-0.3 quintals/sao. It is forecasted that there will be heavy rain in the coming days, so we are racing against the weather to complete the rice harvest in time, avoiding losses in productivity and output.”
In the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop, Dai Trach commune will produce 485 hectares of rice. With the motto "green at home is better than old in the field", avoiding possible heavy storms, the People's Committee of the commune has focused on directing farmers to urgently mobilize machinery and human resources for harvesting.
According to Vice Chairman of Dai Trach Commune People's Committee Tran Xuan Nghi, up to now, the whole commune has harvested over 75% of the area and is expected to complete the winter-spring rice harvest in the next few days. On the basis of implementing winter-spring rice production, the Commune People's Committee has organized a conference to deploy summer-autumn rice production and prepare conditions for seed work, land preparation, and irrigation. Up to now, villages in the commune have registered a summer-autumn production area of about 300 hectares.
In this year's winter-spring crop, the entire Bo Trach district planted 5,115 hectares of rice with medium and short-term rice varieties with high yield, quality, and good consumption market, such as: VNR20, QS88, Bac Thinh, PC6, Ha Phat 3, QC03, HG12, ST25... The district also boldly put into testing new promising rice varieties, such as: DB6, HD34, HD9, BT09, Du Huong 8, Thien Uu 8 (new), BT09, Hung Long 555, ADI28... Accordingly, localities based on the soil of each field to choose and arrange suitable rice varieties...
According to the assessment of agricultural officials and farmers, this year's weather is not favorable for the growth and development of rice plants. Specifically, the long cold season leads to a longer growth period for rice plants, pests and diseases, the harvest schedule is about 15-20 days later than previous years, and there are thunderstorms and strong winds that cause rice plants to break and fall, affecting rice productivity and output.
According to Ngo Van Thanh, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Bo Trach District, up to now, the rice area in the district has basically been harvested, with an estimated yield of 56 quintals/ha, down 2 quintals/ha compared to the same period last winter-spring rice crop. In addition, the current selling price of rice is only about 7,500 VND/kg, 1,000-2,000 VND/kg lower than last year, while the cost of materials and fertilizers are both high, causing many difficulties for farmers.
With the policy of "reaping where you sow", the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Bo Trach district has issued an official dispatch guiding the structure of varieties and the planting schedule for the 2025 summer-autumn rice crop so that localities can proactively implement production. Specifically, according to the department's instructions, this summer-autumn crop, the main variety structure includes: PC6, Bac Thinh, Ha Phat 3, Xuan Mai, HN6...; additional varieties include SV181, DT52, HD34...; promising varieties include HG12, LTH31, DB6, HD9, Du Huong, Huong Com, BT09, HG224... The planting time is expected to start from May 25 to June 10. Areas with proactive irrigation water, especially low-lying areas, need to start planting earlier, ensuring harvest before August 30, 2025; In high fields, less prone to flooding, the sowing schedule can be arranged later but must ensure harvest before September 5 to avoid flooding when there is heavy rain.
