Bo Trach: Winter-spring rice yield decreases, selling price is low.

(QBĐT) - In the fields of Bo Trach district, farmers have basically completed the harvest of the winter-spring rice crop. However, this year's crop yielded lower productivity compared to the same period last year.

Arriving at the rice fields of Dai Trach commune, we felt the bustling atmosphere of the farmers racing against the weather to complete the rice harvest on these sunny days. Harvesting trucks, rice transport vehicles, people loading and carrying rice... laughter and chatter filled the fields.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyet, from Ly Nhan village, Dai Trach commune, said: “This year's winter-spring crop, my family planted 6.5 sao (approximately 0.65 hectares) of rice, including 4 sao of ST25 rice and 2.5 sao of VN20 rice for livestock feed. Due to the weather, this year's rice yield is lower than last year by about 0.2-0.3 quintals per sao. Heavy rain is forecast in the coming days, so we are racing against time to complete the rice harvest and avoid losses in yield and production.”
For the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop season, Dai Trach commune cultivated 485 hectares of rice. Following the principle of "better to harvest while the rice is still green than to let it ripen too much," and to avoid potential heavy thunderstorms, the commune's People's Committee has focused on directing farmers to urgently mobilize machinery and manpower for harvesting.
The 2024-2025 winter-spring rice crop will have lower yields compared to the same period last year.

According to Tran Xuan Nghi, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Dai Trach commune, as of now, the entire commune has harvested over 75% of its rice crop and is expected to complete the winter-spring rice harvest in the next few days. Based on the successful winter-spring rice production, the People's Committee of the commune has organized a conference to implement summer-autumn rice production and prepare the necessary conditions regarding seeds, land preparation, and irrigation infrastructure. To date, villages in the commune have registered approximately 300 hectares for summer-autumn rice production.
This year's winter-spring crop saw Bo Trach district planting 5,115 hectares of rice with medium and short-day varieties that yield high productivity, quality, and have good market demand, such as: VNR20, QS88, Bac Thinh, PC6, Ha Phat 3, QC03, HG12, ST25… The district also boldly introduced promising new rice varieties for testing, such as: DB6, HD34, HD9, BT09, Du Huong 8, Thien Uu 8 (new), BT09, Hung Long 555, ADI28… Accordingly, localities selected and planted suitable rice varieties based on the soil conditions of each field…
According to assessments by agricultural officials and farmers, this year's weather has been unfavorable for the growth and development of rice plants. Specifically, the prolonged cold season has led to a longer growing season, increased pest and disease infestations, and a harvest schedule that is about 15-20 days later than in previous years. Furthermore, thunderstorms and strong winds have caused rice plants to break and fall over, affecting rice yield and production.
Taking advantage of the sunny weather, farmers in Bo Trach district are urgently harvesting and transporting their rice home.

According to Ngo Van Thanh, Deputy Head of the Agriculture and Environment Department of Bo Trach District, the rice crop throughout the district has been basically harvested, with an estimated yield of 56 quintals/hectare, a decrease of 2 quintals/hectare compared to the same period of last year's winter-spring rice crop. In addition, the current selling price of rice is only about 7,500 VND/kg, lower than last year by 1,000-2,000 VND/kg, while the cost of materials and fertilizers remains high, causing many difficulties for farmers.
Following the principle of "harvesting and sowing simultaneously," the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Bo Trach district has issued a document guiding the crop structure and planting schedule for the 2025 summer-autumn rice crop to enable localities to proactively implement production. Specifically, according to the department's guidance, this year's summer-autumn crop will feature key varieties including: PC6, Bac Thinh, Ha Phat 3, Xuan Mai, HN6…; supplementary varieties include SV181, DT52, HD34…; and promising varieties include HG12, LTH31, DB6, HD9, Du Huong, Huong Com, BT09, HG224… The expected planting time is from May 25th to June 10th. Areas with reliable irrigation, especially low-lying areas, should start planting earlier to ensure harvest before August 30th, 2025. In higher-lying rice fields that are less prone to flooding, the sowing schedule can be delayed, but harvesting must be ensured before September 5th to avoid waterlogging in case of heavy rain.
