It is expected that in the 2026-2027 school year, the principle of admission at all levels will be implemented regardless of administrative boundaries. Instead, the admission principle will be applied to ensure that students go to theeducational institution closest to their place of residence.
This is the information given by Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son during a working session with Quang Ninh province on May 15.
This has been piloted by Ho Chi Minh City since 2023 on the basis of applying the Geographic Information System (GIS map). Based on the education sector's data and referring to the GIS map, the district admissions committee will allocate on the principle that the student's current residence is the number 1 priority, to help them study as close to home as possible instead of dividing by residential area as before.
From the pilot with 3 districts: District 8, Tan Binh District and Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City has expanded the application of GIS in enrollment throughout the area with the goal of creating conditions for students to study at the school closest to their home. This approach has received great consensus from parents and students.
In Hanoi, recently, Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training Tran The Cuong also said that the capital is researching the application of GIS maps in primary school enrollment and is expected to implement it from the 2026-2027 school year. Through the positioning system, students living near a school will be able to attend that school, ensuring convenience for students and parents in commuting. Accordingly, students will be assigned to enrollment routes based on their actual location, instead of according to administrative boundaries as at present.
