Advanced technology
To improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions, and move towards a green, environmentally friendly cement production model, Dong Lam Cement Joint Stock Company (Dong Lam Cement) has completed the installation and officially put into operation a power plant utilizing waste heat from the clinker production line with a capacity of 5,000 tons/day. The project, with a designed capacity of 8.7MW and an average operating time of 7,800 hours/year, is considered one of the exemplary projects in the field of energy efficiency and sustainable development of the Vietnamese cement industry.
The waste heat recovery power generation system of Dong Lam Cement Plant is designed according to the Rankine steam cycle, implemented by the contractor SCKE - a joint venture between Kawasaki (Japan) and Conch Group (China). This is a leading boiler manufacturer in the region, applying Japanese-style quality management methods to ensure equipment quality, optimize operational efficiency, and ensure the reliability of the entire system.
SCKE's steam power generation technology is designed with a typical WHR Conch Kawasaki thermodynamic system, using a steam compensation technology (using secondary steam) with an instantaneous evaporator (flasher). This modern solution maximizes the utilization of excess heat from the exhaust gases of the heat exchange tower and the clinker cooling process to preheat water, generate steam, and create superheated steam. This steam is fed into a power turbine, driving a generator to produce electricity directly for the cement production line of the plant.
The system is configured with two heat recovery boilers (PH at the heat exchange tower and AQC at the clinker cooler), a turbine, and a generator, optimized to take advantage of the existing infrastructure of the Dong Lam Cement Plant.
Energy and environmental efficiency
To date, the system has become operational, with actual power generation exceeding the design capacity, and the clinker production line operating stably. The project helps save the equivalent of 30% of the factory's annual electricity consumption that it would otherwise have to purchase from external sources, significantly reducing production costs amidst rising electricity prices and the pressure on electricity supply in the Central region during the dry season.
Besides economic benefits, the project also brings outstanding environmental benefits, including reduced CO₂ emissions, reduced dust released into the environment through chimneys, creation of more jobs for local people; and reduced power transmission losses and improved reliability of electricity supply for the entire production system.
The Dong Lam Cement Plant's waste heat-generating power project not only has economic significance but also demonstrates the company's social and environmental responsibility. This approach is entirely consistent with the national policy on energy conservation, emission reduction, efficient resource utilization, and sustainable development that the Vietnamese government is encouraging.
Mr. Nguyen Huu Chi, Director of the Production Engineering and Research & Development Department of Dong Lam Cement Joint Stock Company, shared: "The proactive investment and operation of a power plant utilizing waste heat is a strategic step, demonstrating Dong Lam's strong commitment to technological innovation, emission reduction, energy saving, and green, sustainable production development. With this project, Dong Lam Cement continues to affirm its position as a pioneering enterprise in the Vietnamese cement industry in applying modern technology, aiming towards a circular economy and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance). The project not only contributes to increasing production and business efficiency but also plays an important role in environmental protection, ensuring energy security, and sustainable development in the Central and Central Highlands regions."
Mr. Pham Phuoc Hien Hoa, General Director of Dong Lam Cement Joint Stock Company, affirmed that the commissioning of the Dong Lam Cement waste heat recovery power generation system is a significant milestone in Dong Lam Cement's green and sustainable development strategy. This system helps utilize and avoid wasting excess heat from clinker production to generate electricity; it self-supplies one-third of the factory's electricity needs, reduces energy costs, and improves production and business efficiency. Furthermore, the system contributes to environmental protection, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and maximizes dust recovery during production, aligning with current trends in green technology and sustainable development.
In the coming period, Dong Lam Cement will continue to fulfill its commitment to green and sustainable development by investing in a solar power project within the factory premises with a capacity of approximately 9MW. To ensure the project becomes operational soon, Dong Lam Cement hopes to continue receiving further support and assistance from relevant departments, agencies, and the central and local governments.
