Recently, salt coffee has attracted young people, tourists and even foreigners. Salt coffee is sold in many places, becoming a popular drink; including in Phan Thiet. Even some coffee shop chains have joined the salt coffee wave, launching their own version of salt coffee. The name "salt coffee" makes many people curious if they have never tried it once. Those who have tried it once will look for this flavor the next time. Salt coffee is a combination of condensed milk, salt and black coffee, which can be drunk hot or cold. By adding sweetened condensed milk to Vietnamese black coffee, topping it with salt cream creates a caramel-colored mixture that softens the bitterness of the coffee, balancing the sweetness of the condensed milk.

While traditional Vietnamese coffee is brewed in a phin (a metal filter coffee maker) placed over a cup or pot. After filtering the coffee, the drinker/vendor stirs in one or two spoons of sweetened condensed milk into the coffee. Salted coffee is considered a special version of the usual black coffee or milk coffee.

Vietnam isn’t the only country that adds salt to coffee. In 2023, a Bon Appetit article suggested adding salt to a bitter beverage to reduce the bitterness and add more flavor to it. The practice of adding salt to drinks dates back hundreds of years in countries like Türkiye, Hungary, and Siberia.

According to a report by global market research agency Mintel, by 2023, outside of Asia, consumers are increasingly interested in these new salt coffee experiences and flavors. About 71% of Gen Z consumers interviewed by Mintel in the US said they were interested in trying Asian-inspired coffee drinks like Vietnamese coffee. Another guide - the Michelin guide highly appreciated the flavor of Vietnamese salt coffee. This is a type of cuisine that combines traditional coffee and creativity, creating a very Vietnamese drink.

Many tourists and young people feel that: Salt coffee is a combination of creamy taste on the surface of coffee, a little salty taste of salt and the sweetness of milk creating a characteristic rich flavor of salt coffee, not bitter from coffee, not sweet from milk. It is really delicious and irresistible. Especially, the price is affordable, suitable for your budget, 15,000 - 20,000 VND/cup.
