Singer Duc Tuan causes outrage for standing on the roof of an ancient house in Hoi An

On July 11, the leader of the People's Committee of Hoi An City ( Quang Nam Province) said that they are verifying the image of male singer Duc Tuan standing on the roof of a house in Hoi An ancient town taking photos, causing outrage among the people.

Previously, on his personal Facebook page, singer Duc Tuan posted a photo series with the theme "Hoi An - Mysterious Ancient Town".

In a photo series posted on July 10, singer Duc Tuan wears a traditional ao dai, standing and sitting on the roof of an ancient house, still wearing shoes. Immediately after these photos were posted, singer Duc Tuan received strong reactions and criticism from the public.

Many harsh comments on the male singer's personal page said that the photos of him standing and sitting on the roof tiles of the old town were both sensitive and risky, and showed a lack of respect for heritage.

Some opinions condemn this action as an infringement of heritage, while preserving a heritage requires a lot of dedication, effort, and money from the people and the government.

Explaining this, on his fanpage with 44,000 followers, singer Duc Tuan said: "Not every house in the old town is a relic. The roof I stood on to take a picture of is not an old house and was built for the purpose of taking pictures." The male singer also added: "That place has a nice view."

Duc Tuan's comments further angered public opinion. Many viewers criticized the male singer for lacking awareness and cultural knowledge.

According to the online community, the place where singer Duc Tuan took the photo is at 166 Tran Phu, Hoi An. The house has a railing but some tourists still climbed over the railing to take photos.

Regarding this incident, on July 11, Mr. Nguyen Van Lanh, Vice Chairman of Hoi An City People's Committee, said that he had assigned specialized agencies to verify, inspect, and review regulations to impose administrative penalties on singer Duc Tuan taking photos on the roof of an ancient house in Hoi An.

On the same day, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hong, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Nam province, also said that the functional forces of Hoi An city are verifying and clarifying the incident, including the responsibility of the house owner.

“The Department has also received information about this incident through the press. The Chairman of the People's Committee of Hoi An City is directing the verification. When there are results, it will be reported to the province. The ancient town of Hoi An has been assigned by the Provincial People's Committee to the People's Committee of Hoi An City to directly manage according to the Law on Heritage and related regulations... Hoi An City also issued regulations and rules for the management of ancient towns. If it is true that the singer behaved like that, it must be strictly handled to set an example,” said Mr. Hong.
