The defendants in the violation case at Co-opBank Ninh Binh were sentenced to 3-8 years in prison.

On the afternoon of May 18, the Provincial People's Court sentenced the subjects involved in the case of violating regulations on banking activities and violations of lending regulations in the operations of credit institutions occurring at the Co-opBank of Vietnam, Ninh Binh branch (Co-opBank Ninh Binh) after 2 days of trial.

Previously, on May 11 and 12, the Provincial People's Court opened the first-instance trial of the following subjects: Dang Van Quang (born in 1964, former Director of Co-opBank Ninh Binh); Tran Xuan Thanh (born in 1976, former Head of Credit Department of Co-opBank Ninh Binh); Nguyen Ngoc Viet (born in 1981, former Deputy Head of Credit Department & Member Care of Co-opBank Ninh Binh); Nguyen Van Quyen (born in 1986, former officer of Credit Department & Member Care of Co-opBank Ninh Binh) for the crime of "Violating regulations on banking activities and other activities related to banking activities"; Dinh Minh Tien (born in 1981, former Head of Credit Department of Co-opBank Ninh Binh) for the crime of "Violating regulations on lending in the activities of credit institutions".

According to the indictment of the Provincial People's Procuracy, from May 16, 2017 to January 28, 2019, the above subjects committed many violations in appraising, proposing, approving loans, checking and supervising the use of loan capital of Me Credit Fund for 32 credit contracts that did not meet the conditions for granting credit, violating the Law on Credit Institutions and the regulations, rules and instructions of the Vietnam Cooperative Bank, leading to the consequence that Me Credit Fund lost its ability to pay Ninh Binh Cooperative Bank the amount of VND 47,883,943,659 (over VND 47.8 billion).

In particular, Dang Van Quang must bear criminal responsibility for causing damage to Ninh Binh Cooperative Bank in the amount of VND 47,883,943,659; Tran Xuan Thanh must bear criminal responsibility for causing damage in the amount of VND 39,883,943,659; Nguyen Van Quyen must bear criminal responsibility for causing damage in the amount of VND 35,635,000,000; Nguyen Ngoc Viet must bear criminal responsibility for causing damage in the amount of VND 17,603,943,659; Dinh Minh Tien must bear criminal responsibility for causing damage in the amount of VND 8 billion; Le Hong Phong must bear criminal responsibility for causing damage in the amount of VND 5.5 billion.

After a period of debate at the trial, the Trial Panel determined that the above violations of the defendants were particularly serious. Based on the provisions of the Penal Code, the Trial Panel sentenced the defendants Dang Van Quang to 8 years in prison, Tran Xuan Thanh to 7 years in prison; Nguyen Van Quyen to 7 years in prison; Nguyen Ngoc Viet to 6 years and 6 months in prison; Dinh Minh Tien to 4 years in prison; and Le Hong Phong to 3 years in prison. In addition, the defendants must also suffer additional penalties and other civil liabilities.
