For many years, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong (57 years old, living in Rach Bay hamlet, Phu Huu commune, Nhon Trach district, Dong Nai province) has not hesitated to sell her property and is willing to take care of nearly 90 lonely elderly people with no place to rely on. Not only does she help lonely elderly people in the district, Ms. Hong also helps in many other places. Every holiday season, she collects gifts from benefactors to give more gifts to the poor.
Previously, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong often participated in charity activities such as cooking and helping the poor at hospitals. Witnessing many unfortunate lives, especially lonely elderly people, Ms. Hong cherished a plan to bring them home to take care of them, but was rejected by her husband.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong (57 years old, living in Rach Bay hamlet, Phu Huu commune, Nhon Trach district, Dong Nai province) did not hesitate to sell her property and is willing to take care of nearly 90 lonely elderly people.
Ms. Hong confided: “Seeing the homeless elderly people having to collect scrap metal and sell lottery tickets, I felt very sorry for them. I asked my husband to take them home to raise, but he did not agree. My husband said that taking care of the elderly was very difficult and suggested that I take care of children. But perhaps I have a better relationship with the elderly. In front of my husband, I said yes, but behind his back, I went to pick them up.”
The first person Mrs. Hong brought home was an old man with no one to rely on who was sitting and crying by the riverbank. Feeling so sorry for the old man's situation, Mrs. Hong decided to take him home first before thinking about how to deal with her husband.
Ms. Hong recounted: “When I brought the old lady home, I saw my husband cleaning the house. My husband saw the old lady but remained silent. Seeing that, I immediately brought her into the house.”
Currently, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hong's shelter is taking care of 82 lonely elderly people, including 46 paralyzed people and 36 people with mental illness or dementia.
After that, Ms. Hong continued to bring home 3 more elderly people to take care of. The next elderly person Ms. Hong intended to bring home was paralyzed and unable to take care of himself or his personal hygiene. Afraid that her husband would object, Ms. Hong asked her husband to build a thatched house next to the house to make it easier to take care of him. When he learned the truth and his wife's intentions, Ms. Hong's husband did not object and gradually became supportive of his wife's actions.
Ms. Hong said that the job of caring for lonely and homeless elderly people has been with her for the past 17 years. Currently, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong's shelter is caring for 82 lonely elderly people, including 46 paralyzed elderly people and 36 elderly people with mental illness or dementia.
