Vietnam needs to create sports icons like Nguyen Huy Hoang, Hoang Quy Phuoc, Tran Hung Nguyen, Nguyen Huu Kim Son (from left to right)

Swimming was once a compulsory subject at the school near the lake.

Developing the swimming movement is an objective need, due to the specific historical and geographical conditions of Vietnam. Our country is located in a hot and humid tropical region, with a lot of rain, many rivers, lakes, streams, lagoons and is surrounded by the sea. With such natural geographical conditions, Vietnamese people living in those places must adapt, that is, they must know how to swim, be good at swimming to survive, to work and fight to protect the Fatherland.

In 1954, in the movement to develop physical education and sports in general and physical education and sports among students in particular, the Government paid great attention to improving physical fitness and preventing drowning. In 1958, the Ministryof Education built a physical education program in a modern direction, suitable for practical conditions. In this program, there was a notable point, which was that all schools near lakes, ponds, rivers and streams were required to train and teach swimming.

In the years 1963 - 1964, swimming was given the focus of development in the physical education and sports program for students. In 1965, the first University and High School Swimming Festival was held. For the armed forces, swimming was a compulsory subject in the training program for military soldiers to prepare for participating in the resistance war against the US and fighting to liberate the South. Armed swimming, long-distance river swimming, diving... were urgent requirements.

In rural areas from the plains to the mountains, the swimming movement has developed widely, including river crossing, armed swimming and activities adapted to rivers and water organized throughout the country. From these policies, typical units of the movement of the whole commune knowing how to swim, the whole people knowing how to swim, typically Nghia Phu commune, Nghia Hung district ( Nam Dinh province). This place has produced two elite swimmers, Ms. Vu Thi Sen, and her younger sister Vu Thi Men. Both sisters are members of the national swimming team, in which Ms. Vu Thi Sen was the first Vietnamese athlete to win a gold medal in Asia in 1966.

WHY NOT ORGANIZE A SWIMMING MOVEMENT LIKE A RUNNING MOVEMENT?

Swimming is closely associated with the history of the country's sports development, especially the river swimming movement. In 1958, Hanoi organized a swimming event across the Red River. During the years of the resistance war against the US and later, swimming movements were organized in many rivers across the country such as the Red River, Ma River, Huong River, Saigon River, Gianh River... Swimming is closely associated with our people, with generations of students, armed forces and working people.

After a long period of time, when modern sports and high-performance sports developed, it seemed that the swimming movement among students and in facilities had subsided. Over the past years, the number of drowning accidents has increased, causing damage to people and property, especially to children. Over the past years, the Ministry of Education and Training and the sports sector have coordinated to promote, develop and expand swimming again to prevent drowning.

It is necessary to create a widespread movement in organizing swimming training to prevent drowning for the people, especially for students. With the current trend of socialization, we have witnessed organizations, individuals and state agencies creating races that attract up to 5,000, 10,000 participants. Why don't we organize a swimming movement?

There must be sports icons like Anh Vien

To create a movement, we must mobilize contributions from social organizations, similar to running competitions. We need sports icons. They start as children, are trained to become excellent athletes, and become swimming idols such as Nguyen Thi Anh Vien, Pham Thanh Bao, Tran Hung Nguyen, Nguyen Huy Hoang...

They grew up from the swimming movement, have talent and are focused. Idols are examples for the younger generation to follow. It is valuable that Anh Vien opened a swimming center to develop swimming among children. It is necessary to call on individuals and organizations to promote the swimming movement..., because this brings great benefits and practical meaning to people's lives, especially the younger generation such as students. Meanwhile, the work of organizing the swimming movement of managers must meet at one point: having the right policy and reasonable measures. Currently, the organization measure through socialization is the most suitable to develop swimming across the country, contributing to the strategy of preventing drowning among students in particular and the people in general.
