On October 28, the Central Endocrinology Hospital launched a project to support the enhancement of comprehensive eye care for the community. It is expected that 10,000 - 12,000 diabetic patients will have their fundus photos taken and be screened for retinal disease and other eye diseases for free using artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

The project will be implemented from now until June 2027, at the Central Endocrinology Hospital ( Hanoi ), piloted in Bac Ninh and Lao Cai, sponsored by Project Orbis international, Inc. (USA).
The project will train 30 doctors, nurses, and technicians in fundus imaging and analysis techniques, and apply AI in diagnosing a number of eye diseases; provide in-depth training in diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma treatment for ophthalmologists; and train communication staff and eye care consultants for patients.
At the same time, organize screening and early detection of eye diseases for endocrine patients at facilities of the Central Endocrine Hospital and some provincial hospitals.
According to Dr. Phan Hoang Hiep, Director of the Central Endocrinology Hospital, diabetic retinopathy is a serious complication of diabetes, progresses silently and can cause blindness if not detected and treated early.
Eye complications due to diabetes are increasing rapidly, but many cases are still not detected and treated promptly, leading to vision loss and even blindness.
The project helps patients to be detected early, intervened promptly, treated properly, and reduce the burden of disability due to eye complications.
The project helps the Central Endocrinology Hospital complete a comprehensive eye care model for endocrine patients; improve the professional capacity of the medical team; apply modern technology in diagnosis, monitoring and treatment; and at the same time expand access to high-quality eye care services for the people.
Through this project, the hospital will build and replicate a diabetic retinopathy management model in the endocrine and metabolic health system nationwide and strengthen connections and referrals for treatment of complex cases between the endocrine and ophthalmological sectors.
