(Dan Tri) - According to Dr. Phan Hoang Hiep, Director of the Central Endocrinology Hospital, diabetic eye disease is increasing rapidly, but many cases have not been detected and treated promptly, leading to vision loss and blindness.

The above information was shared by Dr. Hiep at the launching meeting of the Project "Supporting the enhancement of comprehensive eye care for the community" funded by the US Orbis Organization with non-refundable aid, taking place at the Central Endocrinology Hospital on the afternoon of October 28.

According to Dr. Hiep, eye complications due to diabetes are very common and are increasing rapidly. Notably, many cases have not been detected and treated promptly, leading to vision loss and even blindness.

"Increasing screening, early detection and management of eye complications is key to improving the quality of life for patients," Dr. Hiep informed.

According to this expert, among eye diseases, diabetic retinopathy is one of the dangerous complications that can lead to reduced or lost vision in diabetic patients if not detected and treated promptly.

Therefore, the implementation of this project has special practical significance, helping with early detection - timely intervention - proper treatment, thereby reducing the burden of blindness and disability due to eye complications.

The project "Supporting the enhancement of comprehensive care for the community" will be implemented from October 2025 to June 30, 2027, aiming to protect the vision of people with diabetes and endocrine diseases, contributing to the implementation of the National Strategy for Blindness Prevention by 2030 and the Vietnam Health Program for the period 2021-2025.

In addition, there will be many activities to screen and detect eye diseases early; raise awareness, provide professional training, upgrade equipment, and provide comprehensive eye care screening and consultation for diabetic patients.

In addition, the project also trained about 30 doctors, nurses, and technicians in fundus imaging techniques and analysis, and applied AI in diagnosis; provided in-depth training in diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma treatment for ophthalmologists; and trained 10-15 resource staff in communication and eye care consultation for patients...

The program helps the Central Endocrinology Hospital complete a comprehensive eye care model for endocrinology patients, improving the professional capacity of the medical team. At the same time, applying modern technology in diagnosis, monitoring and treatment, expanding access to high-quality eye care services for the people.

Thereby, the hospital will build and replicate the diabetic retinopathy management model in the endocrine-metabolic health system nationwide and strengthen the connection and referral of treatment of complicated cases between the endocrine and ophthalmological sectors.
