High-rise building in Bangkok collapsed after earthquake, dozens of people are trapped

A 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar on March 28th spread to Bangkok (Thailand) and caused many people in high-rise buildings to run into the streets.


A high-rise building under construction in Bangkok collapsed after an earthquake. At least 43 workers were trapped in the collapsed building in Bangkok, according to AFP, citing medical staff in Thailand. Many other workers fled.

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said she postponed an official visit to the southern island of Phuket to hold an emergency meeting after the earthquake, according to a post on X.

Thailand's prime minister said Bangkok has declared a state of emergency after the earthquake.

Some subway and rail services were suspended in Bangkok. According to the Bangkok Post , residents of the capital Bangkok evacuated many buildings, while businesses announced temporary closures due to the earthquake.

Workers flee as building collapses

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred 16 km northwest of Sagaing city, Myanmar, at a depth of 10 km at about 12:50 on March 28 (local time).

"We have started searching around Yangon city to check for casualties and damage. So far, we have no information," an official from Myanmar's Fire Service Department told Reuters.

The earthquake's tremors were felt in Vietnam and China. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said it was closely monitoring the situation and would provide a detailed report soon.
