The incident happened during the Premier League opening match between Liverpool and Bournemouth in the early morning of August 16.

While striker Antoine Semenyo (Bournemouth) went to the touchline to get the ball for a throw-in, television footage showed a fan in a wheelchair using abusive words and actions towards him.

According to Daily Maill , Merseyside Police have identified the man as Mark Mogan (47 years old). A disabled person using a wheelchair and a Liverpool season ticket holder.

Mr Mogan was identified by police and escorted off Anfield at half-time after witnesses and security staff pointed him out as the man responsible.

The local police announced on 16 August that the man had been arrested. On 18 August, Merseyside Police said: "He has now been released on bail with conditions that he must not attend any regulated football matches in the UK, and must not come within one mile of a designated football ground."

Liverpool FC also issued a statement strongly condemning all forms of racism and affirming that this behavior has no place in society or football. They announced that if found guilty of racism, Mr Mogan would be banned from Anfield for life.

For his part, Antoine Semenyo posted a message on social network X, saying: “That night will stay with me forever. Not because of the words of one person, but because of how the whole football family came together.”

The 25-year-old Ghana winger thanked his Bournemouth team-mates, Liverpool players and even the referees for their prompt response.

Notably, after the incident, Semenyo played excellently and scored both goals for Bournemouth in the 2-4 loss to Liverpool.
