After work, in the evening, Mr. Dinh relaxes by casting familiar animal statues out of cement and enjoys looking at them. Unexpectedly, the opportunity has come, these animal statues help him earn an additional income of several tens of millions of VND/month.
In the last days of 2024, Giao thong Newspaper reporters had the opportunity to visit the small house of Mr. Nguyen Duc Dinh (27 years old, residing in Vinh Trach commune, Thoai Son district, An Giang province) to see the animal statues made of cement but look so real.

Mr. Dinh said that when he was 15 years old, he became a bricklayer and his main job was to cast stone benches for a local facility and work for hire when needed. During the day, he worked hard with his hands covered in mud, but every afternoon, Mr. Dinh wondered how he could create something interesting from a pile of sand mixed with cement.
So in 2019, Mr. Dinh started making the first tiger statue that is currently on display at home. After that, many other lifelike cement statues were born.
The most "huge" work is the king cobra in his garden, 17m long and nearly 2m high. The statue "cost" him nearly 2 million VND - not a small amount of money for him, but in return, his mother's garden became more lively.
When placed in the cage, Mr. Dinh's cement chicken statues look realistic.
Finding it strange and eye-catching, many youtubers asked to film and post it on social networks. And from then on, Mr. Dinh's vivid, lifelike chicken statues attracted many people's attention and they came to buy them.
"At first, I just intended to do it for fun, but I didn't expect it to bring income to my family. Now that many customers know about it, I receive orders for animal statues every month, mainly chicken statues," Dinh shared.
All the steps to create the finished product in the shape of a chicken are done by hand by Mr. Dinh. Currently, he can make most of the animals and mascots of the 12 zodiac animals. Among them, the chicken statue model is the most ordered.
From being made just for fun, now Mr. Dinh's chicken statues are ordered by many people.
To create a vivid statue, Mr. Dinh had to spend time carefully researching chicken breeds from shape, color... Each statue takes about 5 days to complete, from making ribs, covering meat, attaching tails, to painting and drying.
"At first, I worked mainly from imagination and the main prototypes were chickens in my garden.
Later, I wanted to improve my skills and diversify my designs, so I carefully studied each breed of chicken, from the eyes, expressions to posture... to create the most beautiful and realistic chicken statue," Dinh confided.
The snake was cast from cement by Mr. Dinh to help his garden become more lively.
Each breed of chicken has its own appearance and physique. For example, the Lanh My chicken has no comb and a small face; the male fighting chicken will have a more muscular body than the female with tall, strong legs, sharp and long spurs, a large comb, a long body, a high neck, sharp eyes, and bright red skin...
Each chicken costs between 1.5 and 2 million VND. Other animals, depending on size and type, will have specific quotes depending on the customer's request.
Animal statues weigh from 5kg to 100kg, small ones are sold for 1.5 to 2 million VND. The larger the statue, the higher the price.
This pair of ducks is a new product cast from cement by Mr. Dinh.
Mr. Mai Ba Loc, Vice Chairman of Vinh Trach Commune People's Committee, Thoai Son District (An Giang) said that with his talented hands and endless creativity, Mr. Dinh has created cement statues, including a lifelike chicken statue that is loved and sought after by many people.
In order to develop this work, in early 2023, the locality supported Mr. Dinh to access a loan from the Social Policy Bank with an amount of 30 million VND. Up to now, Mr. Dinh has fully paid the interest to the Social Policy Bank.
From this money, Mr. Dinh used it to buy raw materials to make cement statues ordered in large quantities by customers.
"Currently, the locality is also monitoring and continuing to support Mr. Dinh to develop this job as well as providing vocational training so that local people can have more income," Mr. Loc added.
