The annual report on the Asia Power Index 2024 recently released by Australia's Lowy Institute shows that Vietnam ranked 12th out of 27 countries and territories ranked. Accordingly, Vietnam's overall power has increased by 1.2% compared to 2023, creating more influence in the region than expected.
Director of the Lowy Institute's Southeast Asia program and head of the Asia Power Index project, Susannah Patton, said the ranking aims to compare the comprehensive power of countries based on a series of factors such as the level of self-reliance and influence, the way of using power, resources...
As a middle-class country, Vietnam’s biggest improvement in 2024 will be its diplomatic and cultural influence. Compared to other countries in Southeast Asia, Vietnam ranks behind Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia.

According to Ms. Susannah Patton: "This reflects Vietnam's diplomatic strategy with many partners. In 2023, Vietnam is the only country in the region to welcome both the leaders of the US and China." Ms. Patton believes that Vietnam achieved the best results in terms of diplomatic influence because it was one of the most diplomatically active countries in the region in the past year.
As of the end of August 2024, the Vietnamese Government had established diplomatic relations with 194 countries around the world, had economic relations with more than 230 countries and territories, and signed 16 Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), including many new generation FTAs.
In addition to diplomacy, Ms. Susannah Patton also emphasized that Vietnam has improved its score in economic relations, becoming a country with a connected economy, able to link the US and China.
The US and China are currently the two countries leading the rankings with 81.7 points and 72.7 points respectively.
Japan, hit by a prolonged economic slowdown, slipped to fourth place in the rankings, behind India. This is the first time Japan has lost this position since Australia's leading foreign policy institute began publishing the annual assessment in 2018.
The sharp decline in technological advantage in the face of competition from South Korea, China and Taiwan (China) is the reason why Japan's foreign investment in this field has declined and led to a decrease in labor productivity.
Meanwhile, India rose to third place thanks to the future resources of its young population. The labor force growing faster than the overall population will have a positive effect on the country's economic growth in the coming decades.
This power index measure is based on eight criteria: economic capacity, military capacity, resilience, future resources, economic relations, defense networks, diplomatic influence and cultural influence.
