Chieng Sai commune officials guide people in taking care of sugarcane.

The People's Committee of Chieng Sai commune has mobilized people to convert ineffective crop areas to sugarcane; coordinated with specialized agencies to organize training on sugarcane planting and care techniques; supported people in borrowing capital, providing quality seeds and fertilizers. The People's Committee of the commune has cooperated with Son La Sugarcane Joint Stock Company to build concentrated raw material areas, increasing product value. Up to now, the whole commune has more than 250 hectares of sugarcane, with an output of about 17,640 tons of sugarcane per year, and the total income from sugarcane of the commune is more than 17 billion VND per year.

Ms. Dinh Thi Khem, Vice Chairwoman of the People's Committee of Chieng Sai Commune, said: The People's Committee of the commune has built models of linkage between people and businesses in the sugarcane value chain. Signing a contract to purchase products with Son La Sugarcane Joint Stock Company, helping people feel secure in production, expanding acreage and applying science and technology, investing in intensive cultivation, improving productivity and quality of sugarcane.

The family of Mr. Dinh Van Quyen, Na Don village is one of the first households in the village to switch to growing sugarcane, helping the family have a stable income. Mr. Quyen shared: The family has been growing sugarcane for more than 3 years, with nearly 2 hectares. This year, they harvested more than 80 tons of sugarcane, after deducting costs, each hectare brought in a profit of 65-70 million VND. In addition, the family also selects good sugarcane shoots to sell to new planting households, and the rest is used as animal feed. Growing sugarcane has the advantage of low initial costs, can be harvested for 2-3 years before having to replant, has few pests and diseases, and does not require as much care as other crops. In addition, the output is guaranteed by Son La Sugarcane Joint Stock Company, so prices are not forced down. In the coming time, the family will continue to expand the sugarcane growing area to increase income.

Mr. Dinh Van Dung, Party Cell Secretary, Head of Na Don Village, said: The village has 163 households, previously, mainly growing corn and cassava. To help people develop the economy and increase income, the village has promoted and mobilized people to bring new, high-yield, high-quality crops into production, including sugarcane. Up to now, the village has 42 households growing sugarcane, with 70 hectares, bringing in a stable income of 60-70 million VND/ha. This year, 27 more households have registered to grow sugarcane.

However, the expansion of sugarcane growing area in Chieng Sai is facing some difficulties, such as the initial investment capital of the people is still limited; the internal traffic infrastructure for harvesting is not yet synchronized; mechanized machinery is still lacking... We hope for the attention of local Party committees and authorities, and the support of enterprises to help Chieng Sai expand the sugarcane growing area, increase economic efficiency, and improve the lives of the people.
