According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, today (May 20), the Central Highlands and the South will continue to maintain sunny conditions during the day, but in the afternoon and evening there is a possibility of scattered showers and thunderstorms, locally heavy rain with common rainfall of about 10-30mm, some places over 50mm.
The weather agency said the rain will be localized. Flash floods and landslides may occur in mountainous areas, while low-lying areas and urban areas in the South may be flooded.
On the evening of May 19, some places in the Central Highlands had heavy rain such as: Mang Canh (Kon Tum) 95mm, Ia Ake ( Gia Lai ) 87.6mm, Tan Thanh (Long An) 89.6mm.
International forecasts also give similar comments. According to data from Weather2Travel (compiled from Met Office - UK and the Netherlands Meteorological Institute), on May 20, Ho Chi Minh City and the Southern region will have the highest temperature of about 33 degrees Celsius, the UV index will reach a very high level (11+), the heat will last until mid-afternoon, then there is a possibility of thunderstorms towards the end of the day. The situation is similar in the Central Highlands provinces.
Thus, both domestic and international meteorological agencies agree that this afternoon and evening, May 20, the Central Highlands and the South will have thunderstorms, locally heavy rain, along with the risk of extreme phenomena such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, and lightning.
