According to a VNA correspondent in the Americas, Paraguayan Foreign Minister Rubén Ramírez Lezcano said on April 3 that the government of this country has decided to close embassies in five countries that do not have diplomatic representations in Asuncion, including Egypt, Canada, Portugal, Australia and Switzerland.
Speaking at a press conference after a meeting at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Mr. Ramírez Lezcano emphasized that the decision to close embassies in the five countries was based on the principle of "reciprocity" in international relations, and affirmed that this measure would help Paraguay save national budget for maintaining representative offices abroad.
Foreign Minister Ramírez Lezcano stated that Asunción's diplomatic missions in neighboring countries of the five mentioned countries will concurrently perform diplomatic activities and protect citizens.
In the case of Switzerland, the Paraguayan diplomatic mission in Geneva or the embassy in France will be responsible for diplomatic matters in the country.
Meanwhile, the Paraguayan embassy in Washington (USA) will concurrently operate in Canada.
According to the Paraguayan Ministry of Foreign Affairs , closing the five diplomatic missions mentioned above will help the Government of this South American country save about 8 million USD in budget each year./.
