Closing the deal using AI to 'magically' transform the female lead's face, conveying a message of human kindness

“Strong, determined, resurrected, courageous” are the words that can be used to describe the event of the movie Chot Don being shown in theaters nationwide from August 7, after more than 200 days of postponement due to an unprecedented incident in the Vietnamese film industry.

The film Chot Don by the director duo Bao Nhan and Nam Cito features the participation of actors: Quyen Linh, Hong Dao, Hong Van, Do Nhat Ha, Moc Tra, Le Loc, Khuong Le, Mai Bao Vinh... with the appearance of the female lead character named Hoang Linh being intervened by artificial intelligence (AI) technology to edit and complete involuntarily.

2 storylines in 1 movie

Closing deals reflects a current phenomenon in the era of social networks and the booming online retail industry: instead of selling in traditional markets, brands and products have focused on livestream programs to promote products with the attraction of "livestream warriors" - KOLs, representative faces... with a large number of followers online.

Hoang Linh (a character created by AI technology) is married into a wealthy family. Her mother-in-law (played by Hong Van) urges her to have children, but Hoang Linh is a talented, strong woman who puts her career success first. Hoang Linh's main rival is Ky - a sharp-witted girl who uses tricks to try to defeat Hoang Linh in billion-dollar livestream sales sessions.

An (Quyen Linh) is a 60-year-old motorbike taxi driver with a friendly face, so Hoang Linh brought him to work at the company to help her with her livestream sales sessions. He has many difficulties in his personal life such as suffering from dementia, his son working abroad, and raising a lost daughter. He finds some comfort in his neighbor named Binh (Hong Dao), who takes care of Mai every time Mr. An goes to work.

Ms. Dinh Thanh Huong, Project Director of the film Chot Don, said: The film once faced the risk of being canceled due to unforeseen force majeure. “However, the collective of hundreds of people spent too much time, effort and tears, so we wanted to complete it with the solution of pioneering the use of AI technology on the main character,” Ms. Thanh Huong shared.

Humanity needs to "close the deal"

Hoang Linh is tired, facing the consequences of her mistakes. At work, she has success and then gets bullied. When she returns home, her relationship with her husband has long been cold. She seeks advice and comfort from her gentle and simple uncle An. From there, this character representing modern women realizes what is the true value of life instead of the fragile fame on the internet and the virtual world .

The order closes to promote the character line played by Quyen Linh, Hong Dao and little Moc Tra.

Mr. An represents the colorful life and kindness in life. He "closes deals" with everyone around him with humanity: helping Hoang Linh carefree, raising and finding Mai's biological mother, gently accepting the feelings of the cheerful neighbor. If Hoang Linh's journey carries the value of redemption from failure, Mr. An and Mrs. Binh are the light of kindness. As actor Quyen Linh said: "The material in the film heals all wounded hearts."

Vietnamese audiences experiencing the AI character’s face on the cinema screen will certainly have many mixed opinions. In fact, AI rendering technology cannot make Hoang Linh’s face 100% lifelike, the expression is still “stiff” and not smooth.

However, this is not only an experiment for Chot Do, but also a reference for the entire domestic production industry to have new directions for thoroughly applying technology to films. The pioneer will not be perfect, but all bold things need a starting point - in the context that AI will constantly develop to effectively assist human work.

The producer of Chot Don pioneered the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in post-production for the main character in the hope that the audience will receive the film with an open and tolerant spirit.
