American veterinarian Karen Becker was the first to announce Bobi's death.

On Facebook, the doctor wrote: "Despite living longer than any dog in history, Bobi's 11,478 days on Earth will never be enough for those who love this dog."

Dr Becker met Bobi in February after he was recognised by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest living dog.

Revealing the secret to Bobi's longevity, Leonel Costa, the dog's owner, said it was all thanks to good nutrition, regular exposure to nature, adequate veterinary care and love.

Bobi the dog lived his whole life with the Costa family in the rural village of Conqueiros, Leiria, Portugal.

Before Bobi, the previous oldest dog was Bluey, also from Portugal. He lived to be 29 years and 5 months old.
