Urgent maintenance and repair

According to Dong Cam Irrigation Company Limited (Dong Cam Company), after the end of the winter-spring crop, the unit closed the water supply to the irrigation systems to carry out maintenance and repairs, ensuring uninterrupted water supply to the fields so that farmers can prepare the land and sow rice in time.

“This time, the company mobilized many qualified contractors to focus on equipment and human resources to repair 23 items including: construction and installation, dredging and repairing canal systems, and maintenance of machinery and equipment with a budget of more than 9 billion VND,” said Mr. Nguyen Van Chien, Deputy Director of Dong Cam Company.

At the North main canal (Phu Hoa district), in recent days, the entire workforce in the unit has been focusing on processing and maintaining construction items to ensure the production schedule.

Mr. Huynh Quoc Viet, Head of the Bac Canal Irrigation Station, said: The unit has reinforced and repaired the roof position of the left bank of the canal, the bottom of the canal and renewed the irrigation culvert with reinforced concrete structure at positions K3+715, K11+595, K17+700, K29+475; repaired and dredged the canal system and cleared garbage to clear the flow. In addition, the unit also repaired trapezoidal canal sections, the roof of the left bank of the canal that had collapsed, damaged, and degraded such as: N2 canal section from K0+500 - K0+700, N3 canal left bank section from K1+090 - K1+283, N5 canal section from K2+181 - K2+440 and My Hoa canal section from K0+492 - K0+752.

At Tuy An, Dong Tron (Tuy An district) and Phu Xuan (Dong Xuan district) irrigation stations, workers are also simultaneously repairing damaged items and works in the localities. The focus is on repairing KC1 canal from K2+873 - K3+000, the East main canal from K0+540 - K0+690, the West main canal from K0+311 - K0+429 and reinforcing and protecting Suoi Tia siphon of N2 canal at K2+311...

Plan to prevent drought

It is forecasted that from now until July 2025, the heat will be high and increase in intensity, with the risk of drought and water shortage in areas outside irrigation works, high altitude areas, and far from irrigation areas. In order to proactively direct the production of summer-autumn and winter-spring crops in 2025 to be effective and limit damage caused by adverse weather conditions, the provincial Department of Agriculture and localities in the area have been actively implementing many synchronous solutions to help farmers effectively respond to adverse production conditions and make efforts to minimize costs.

To successfully produce the 2025 summer-autumn crop, according to Mr. Truong Quang Tuong, Deputy Head of the Provincial Department of Crop Production and Livestock, the local agricultural sector and farmers need to pay attention to ensuring the isolation period between the two rice crops, creating conditions for good implementation of land preparation, straw treatment and destruction of pests in the fields.

According to calculations by the Institute of Water Resources Planning, the total water demand in the production season at 20 irrigation works in the province is about 180.9 million m3. Of which, 19/20 works meet 100% of the planned irrigation area; 1/20 irrigation works are at risk of water shortage in the summer-autumn crop in the areas at the end of the canal, far from the irrigation area, with a total affected area of about 700-1,000 hectares...

“In addition to following the sowing schedule and using suitable varieties, localities need to pay attention to the weather and hydrological situation to promptly inform people to be proactive in sowing and caring for rice. At the same time, review and develop a seasonal calendar plan and rice variety structure for each region suitable to the current water resource situation; proactively convert crops from rice fields to other upland crops that are drought- and salinity-tolerant in areas with difficult water resources…”, Mr. Tuong informed.

Mr. Nguyen Minh Hue, Chairman of Dong Cam Company, said: Currently, the water resources of irrigation systems and reservoirs are sufficient to serve the summer-autumn crop production. However, if the hot weather lasts for a long time without rain, the risk of water shortage and local drought in some rice fields may occur. To be proactive in irrigation, the company has proposed solutions to provide enough water and prevent drought in case of unusual weather changes.

Specifically, for the North canal system, Ben Loi siphon pumping station is operated to supply water to Phu Vang pumping station to irrigate 350ha, Hoa Kien 42ha, and Cooperative 2 Ward 9 387ha; Go Choi pumping station supplies water to the end of N5 canal at Hoa Tri 1 Cooperative, Hoa Tri 2 Cooperative; De Go pumping station supplies water to the end of Hoa Tri 1 Cooperative canal. For the South canal system, Hoa Dong field electric pumping station is operated to supply water to N6 canal; Dieu Ga electric pumping station supplies water to N2-2 Hoa My Dong canal; Van Loc and Dong Co pumping stations (Hoa My Dong commune) supply water to N4 and N2-2 canals; Dong Dua pumping station supplies water to the end of the main southern canal of Hoa Hiep Trung Cooperative. As for the Phu Xuan system, Dong Thanh drought-resistant electric pumping station is installed to pump water from Tra Buong river to irrigate the fields at the end of N1 canal belonging to Xuan Phuoc Cooperative; Install Bau Son drought-fighting pumping station to pump water from the stream into N2 canal to fight drought for Xuan Quang 3 Cooperative...

Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen Tran, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Tay Hoa district, said: The district has strengthened production direction in drought conditions; proactively implemented drought prevention measures according to Directive 19 of the Provincial People's Committee; encouraged farmers to continue promoting the conversion of crop and season structures in drought conditions, associated with effectively implementing policies to support the conversion of crop structures; actively applied scientific and technical advances and advanced farming techniques in production.

Accordingly, for rice, apply IPM, IPHM, SRI processes; use quality rice varieties, sow at reasonable density (pure rice 80kg/ha, hybrid rice 40kg/ha); for upland crops, apply organic farming processes, VietGAP; apply advanced irrigation measures, save water.
