Pig farm concentrated in Lam Son commune (Ngoc Lac).
The increase in live pig prices is a good condition for farmers in the province to re-herd to meet the year-end demand, ensuring a stable consumer market in the province. Ms. Ha Thi Nhan's family in Hamlet 6, Lam Son Commune (Ngoc Lac) is currently raising 10 sows and 75 pigs. Last April, she sold more than 50 pigs at a price of 78,000 VND/kg. At this price, each pig brings a profit of about 2.5 - 3 million VND. Ms. Nhan said: “Thanks to proactively having breeding pigs from my family's breeding sows, I feel very secure in raising them. To help the pigs grow healthily, I have strictly implemented the vaccination of pigs against diseases, and when the weather changes, I add vitamin-rich food to increase resistance. When it rains, I block the wind, and when it is sunny, I keep the barn cool. For food, I make use of vegetables, corn flour grown by my family, supplemented with bran purchased from reputable dealers with clear origins.”
Having just sold 300 pigs to traders, Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, owner of a large-scale pig farm in Quang Duc commune (Quang Xuong) excitedly said: "Recently, the price of live pigs in the province has continuously increased rapidly, currently at 72,000 VND/kg. On average, for each 100kg pig, my family will earn approximately 7 billion VND; after deducting expenses, the profit is about 2 billion VND. Compared to other small-scale farming forms, households raising pigs in the form of farms, from medium to large scale, have the advantage of being proactive in breeding, reducing input costs; strictly implementing disease prevention processes, thus limiting risks".
Due to the increase in pork prices, pork prices in traditional markets and supermarkets have also increased. Currently, the price of meat in traditional markets is from 100,000 - 140,000 VND/kg depending on the type; in supermarkets and clean food stores, the price is from 140,000 - 165,000 VND/kg depending on the type. Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhung, a meat trader at Dong Huong Vegetable and Food Wholesale Market ( Thanh Hoa City), said: "Because the price of live pigs has increased, we are forced to increase the price of pork, but in fact, purchasing power has not increased but has decreased compared to previous months. The main reason is that due to the hot weather, consumers have switched to using seafood, meat with cooling properties or more vegetables."
As of mid-May 2025, the total pig herd in the province has reached more than 1.28 million, meeting the consumption needs in the province and partly exported to other provinces and cities. To encourage people to restore their pig herds safely and effectively, localities have implemented many mechanisms, encouraging people and businesses to develop large-scale, concentrated pig farms, applying high technology and ensuring biosafety to reduce costs and reduce diseases. In addition, some households and businesses have proactively produced breeding pigs, linked with feed factories to reduce input costs. Along with that, localities are currently focusing on implementing the first vaccination phase in 2025 with the best results. At the same time, strictly implement disease prevention and control, especially in localities at risk of disease outbreaks according to the recommendations of professional sectors.
Pig farming is still identified as one of the main directions for agricultural production. Investing in herd restoration is an inevitable issue for breeders. However, in the current situation when pork prices are still unstable and pig breeding prices and animal feed prices are still high, people need to carefully calculate when deciding to restore herds so that they are reasonable with current conditions and capabilities. With breeding animals, it is necessary to choose animals that are of guaranteed quality and disease-free, with clear origins. The provincial Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine recommends that people and businesses need to carry out controlled herd restoration; do not restore herds en masse but maintain them at an appropriate level, and produce according to market demand. At the same time, people should buy breeding animals at reputable establishments, with clear origins, ensuring quality, absolutely do not buy floating breeding animals without verifying their origin, thoroughly apply safe breeding measures, ensure clean barns - clean breeding animals - clean food and drinking water. At the same time, it is necessary to carry out good environmental sanitation work in livestock farming and vaccinate pigs according to recommendations. This will ensure stable and effective pig farming for people.
