The owner of a motel in Hue invested 1 billion VND and opened it just one month ago, but lost everything due to floods.

(Dan Tri) - Half of the one billion VND invested in the homestay was borrowed by Huy and a friend from the bank and relatives. However, after the historic flood, the young man returned to the original starting point.

In recent days, provinces from Ha Tinh to Lam Dong have had heavy to very heavy rain, with rainfall ranging from 100-200mm, with Hue city being the most severely affected.

When the historic flood surrounded many provinces and cities in the Central region, Mr. Nguyen Quoc Huy (22 years old), owner of a homestay located on Ba Trieu Street, Xuan Phu Ward, Hue City, helplessly watched his entire property submerged in the raging water.

"After only 2 hours, the water rose abnormally, washing away the first floor"

Sharing with Dan Tri reporter on the morning of October 29, Mr. Huy said that the homestay was his entire business with a friend. The flood washed away everything they had, and both of them are now penniless and in debt.

After graduating from university, Huy and his friends borrowed money from the bank and relatives, withdrew all their savings of about 1 billion VND, and set up a small homestay in April. The homestay had only been in operation for about a month when a natural disaster suddenly struck.

"We had just opened and welcomed the first guests when the floodwaters came. The first floor was completely damaged, from the beds, wardrobes, mattresses, sofas to the interior equipment were all flooded. Only the refrigerator was able to be moved to the second floor," Mr. Huy said sadly.

Before that, after hearing the news from the media, Huy and his friend spent a day cleaning up and moving their belongings to a higher place. However, everything happened beyond expectations.

At around 7am on October 27, water from upstream suddenly poured down. After only 2 hours, the water level rose abnormally. On the street, the water level was above people's heads, and inside the houses, it rose as high as 1.5m at one point.

Having lived in Hue for over 20 years, he has never witnessed such a heavy rain and flood. Not only did the property suffer damage, the homestay also had to refund guests' room reservations because many people canceled their reservations due to the rain and flood.

"Now we are also empty-handed. More than half of the initial investment capital was borrowed money," the 22-year-old man said sadly.

Regroup and build from scratch

During the rainy and flood days, the area where Mr. Huy lives lost electricity and phone signal, but luckily there was still running water. On the morning of October 29, electricity and internet connection have returned to normal. At this time, the water has started to recede, so everyone is pulling themselves together to clean up.

After the disaster, he is trying to borrow more money to repair and restore the homestay. Despite the heavy damage, the young man remains optimistic, considering this a great lesson.

"Next time when there is a flood warning, we need to prepare more carefully, so as not to be caught off guard like this time," he said.

According to Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Huy - an expert in weather forecasting, climate change and disaster risk reduction, the amount of rain on October 27 at Bach Ma peak was equivalent to the average rainfall in 2 years combined in Ninh Thuan (formerly, now part of Khanh Hoa), showing that Hue city had to endure a terrible amount of rain.

Specifically, on October 27, Bach Ma peak, rainfall measured up to 1,700mm, Khe Tre town measured rainfall over 1,200mm.

Exceptionally heavy rain in the upstream area has caused water to rush into hydroelectric reservoirs upstream.

The hydroelectric reservoirs released floodwaters, combined with prolonged rains downstream, causing the water levels of the rivers passing through Hue City to rise rapidly. All the central streets of Hue City were submerged in water. In some low-lying areas, floodwaters rose as high as the roofs of houses.

Military, police and officials were urgently mobilized to stand guard at hot spots, providing maximum support to the people. However, the floodwaters rose so quickly that people were still unable to react.

Hue has stopped receiving visitors at some relic sites due to heavy rain and floods. The destinations will reopen when the weather stabilizes, ensuring safety for visitors and relic sites.
