From a girl who was not confident with her foreign language skills, Nguyen Nam Bao Ngoc, a 12th grade English student at Phan Ngoc Hien High School for the Gifted ( Ca Mau province), changed her learning method effectively and established a project to provide free English instruction to nearly 500 people.

The days of "burying my head" in memorizing... English

In 6th grade, Ngoc studied all subjects equally, except for English , which was not as expected. "The score I got in this subject was not too low, but it was only thanks to diligence, meaning that no matter what the teacher gave me, I would "bury my head" in memorizing it without understanding the true meaning of the vocabulary or sentence. I was extremely self-conscious about the teachers' unexpected questions," Ngoc recalled.

In 7th grade, realizing that coping thinking did not help her improve, Ngoc determined to change her learning method. In addition to the time spent listening to lectures in class, she mainly studied by herself and practiced at home. Every day, this female student spent 6 hours studying English. During 1 year of studying, she solved 200 to 300 exam questions from different years and schools. "Later, when guiding the project's students, I always advised them to avoid their previous wrong thinking. Because English is a language, and since it is a language, you have to know how to use it, not just memorize it," Ngoc added.

Finishing 7th grade with the highest average score in the block, Ngoc received a full scholarship to an English center in the province. From here, she was exposed to many things and gradually developed a special passion for this subject.

"I think that besides the guidance of teachers, self-study is the best method. A very good and effective way for me is to watch foreign movies. I will imitate the accent, intonation... of my favorite characters or lines. Thanks to that, my listening and speaking skills are improved a lot," Ngoc revealed.

Also that summer, Ngoc was honored to be one of more than 100 Vietnamese students participating in an exchange program in the US. After finishing, she decided to study two programs in parallel: grade 9 at Balboa School (US), online, and grade 8 in Vietnam. During her 4 years at Balboa School, Ngoc always achieved good results, never "falling" from an A. In Vietnam, she also maintained the title of excellent student for 11 consecutive years.

"Because I study a foreign program, sometimes there are new vocabulary and knowledge. However, I always look at it from a positive perspective and see it as an opportunity to learn and develop myself," Ngoc said.

Mission of "I Love You"

In January 2022, Ngoc founded the "English Lover" Project with the desire to help young people having difficulties in English. "I am luckier than many others to have an environment to communicate with native speakers. I want those who lack basic English, do not have the conditions to go to a learning center... to have a place to develop this skill. In the current period of international integration, foreign languages ​​are very important skills for young people to develop themselves as well as create more opportunities," Ngoc shared.

To ensure the professionalism of the project, Ngoc constantly improves her knowledge. This female student has obtained a TESOL certificate (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages: a recognized professional qualification in teaching English to speakers of other languages) issued by Educap - Australian International TESOL Hanoi. "Actually, I don't encounter too many difficulties in instructing students, because I used to be self-conscious and not good at it... so I always put myself in their shoes and find the most suitable solution," Ngoc said.

"English Lover" is divided into two main branches, including: "Here is the English Root" and "Education Promotion Fund". Of which, "Here is the English Root" organizes online learning with nearly 500 students. In the early days of the project's establishment, there were only 30 participants, then it attracted many young people from different provinces and Vietnamese students studying abroad, such as Korea, Japan... As for the money earned from her tutoring job (with a fee), Ngoc contributes to the "Education Promotion Fund". Every year, the fund is used to give gifts and donate to charity activities, helping those in difficult circumstances.

"This is a non-profit project. I refuse to accept any donations because I don't want it to lose its original nature and mission. It's also a way for me to feel that life is more meaningful. Everyone strives for happiness, so I always try to help other fates. Helping one more person increases the level of happiness," Ngoc expressed.

Sharing about her future plans, Ngoc said that in addition to her goal of passing the university entrance exam, she will continue to implement the "My Lover" Project, maintain the organization, and participate in other community activities.
