According to the plan, the Lao Cai – Hanoi – Hai Phong railway project has a total main line length of about 390.9 km and 3 branch lines of about 27.9 km, with a total preliminary investment of nearly 203,231 billion VND (equivalent to about 8.369 billion USD). The route starts from Lao Cai station (connecting with Hekou Bac station in China) and ends at Lach Huyen wharf area (Hai Phong), passing through 9 provinces and cities including: Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc, Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Hung Yen, Hai Duong and Hai Phong.
In Hai Phong alone, the main line is about 48.9 km long and two branch lines are more than 18.9 km long, including the line from Nam Hai Phong station to Nam Do Son station and the line from Nam Dinh Vu Technical Operation Station to Dinh Vu station. The design speed for the main line is 160 km/h, while the branch lines reach 80 km/h. It is expected that the area that needs to be cleared in the city is about 370 hectares, belonging to 5 districts.
