At exactly 4 PM on December 15th, the first test flight, VN5002, landed on the runway of Long Thanh Airport ( Dong Nai ). This historic moment unfolded in the presence of engineers and workers at the construction site.

At 4:03 PM, the plane taxied to the tarmac. Two fire trucks performed a water salute to celebrate this historic moment.
Prior to this, the air traffic control crew at the airport spent months training and familiarizing themselves with the new equipment at the air traffic control tower.
After landing, the aircraft made its first takeoff at Long Thanh Airport at 6 PM the same day and returned to Tan Son Nhat Airport at 6:40 PM.
According to VATM leaders, the flight on December 15th was important for the final assessment of preparations for the official flight on December 19th.
This is a technical flight aimed at testing and evaluating the entire flight operations support system, including navigation, communication, and air traffic control; aircraft reception and coordination procedures; and runway, taxiway, and apron lighting systems. It also checks the coordination between operational, security, and air traffic control units at Long Thanh.
The aircraft used was a Boeing 787 – the largest wide-body aircraft currently operated by Vietnam Airlines , with a maximum capacity of approximately 340 passengers. The flight carried only the flight crew and technical staff.
According to the Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV), all air traffic infrastructure at Long Thanh Airport, including runways, taxiways, and aprons, meets ICAO standards; the ILS/DME precision landing support system and aviation lights operate stably in all weather conditions.
