At the workshop, Dr. Le Quang Thanh, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Maternal and Fetal Medicine Association, former Director of Tu Du Hospital, shared about: "The role of NIPT in prenatal screening, new updated trends". From real clinical cases, Dr. Thanh shared about the effectiveness of the NIPT method, through which doctors could directly discuss situations, receive advice from experts and compare with personal experiences, bringing practical value to attendees.
Accordingly, prenatal diagnosis and screening aims to provide information to couples about the risk of giving birth to children with genetic defects or abnormalities. Prenatal screening by NIPT is a non-invasive method, helping to assess the risk of the fetus having genetic syndromes with high accuracy, absolutely safe for both mother and baby. NIPT testing is based on fetal DNA released from the placenta into the mother's blood to detect abnormalities in the number of chromosomes. This method is performed from the 9th week of pregnancy, and should be indicated for older parents (mother over 35, father over 40), or when the fetal ultrasound shows increased nuchal translucency...

Also at the workshop, Specialist Doctor I Nguyen Thi Kim Chi, Head of Obstetrics Department, Dong Nai - 2 Hospital shared about the situation of pregnancy screening in the first 3 months of pregnant women right at the hospital. Currently, the hospital is implementing methods to screen for the risk of fetal malformations in the first 3 months of pregnancy such as: morphological ultrasound, double test, NIPT... and screening for the risk of preeclampsia.
In the future, the hospital will standardize morphological ultrasound and fetal echocardiography; apply AI in ultrasound and expand the current NIPT method. Instead of only detecting abnormalities in chromosomes 21, 18, and 13, NIPT will screen for single-gene mutations that cause genetic diseases such as congenital heart disease, neurodegeneration, etc.
