Korean expert becomes head coach of Vietnam shooting team

The Department of Sports and Physical Training (DST) has officially decided to sign a contract with Mr. Park Chung-gun. The contract is valid from November 3, 2023 to August 31, 2024.

According to many sources, this expert receives a salary of 6,000 USD/month. In the immediate future, Mr. Park Chung-gun will take the position of head coach of the Vietnamese shooting team from November 3, 2023 to December 31, 2023.

Mr. Park has been the interim coach of the Vietnamese shooting team since the 31st SEA Games in 2022, after coach Nguyen Thi Nhung resigned. Previously, Mr. Park Chung-gun was invited to work in Vietnam since 2015 as an expert for the shooting team.

Over the years, many of Vietnam's shooting successes have been attributed to expert Park Chung-gun. Mr. Park was instrumental in the gold medal and silver medal at the 2016 Olympics and a silver medal at the world championships won by shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh. He also made an important contribution to Pham Quang Huy's gold medal at the 19th Asian Games and Thu Vinh's ticket to the 2024 Olympics.

However, the incident at the Vietnam Shooting Federation's award ceremony on the evening of October 18 caused the Federation to receive a lot of criticism from fans. Expert Park Chung-gun - an important member of the team - was not named. He was invited to attend the ceremony but only watched and was not honored. He also left and was not present in the team's souvenir photo.

Coach Park Chung-gun and the Vietnamese shooting team will compete in the Asian Shooting Championships with only 10 days left on his contract. This is an important tournament in the official shooting competition system to determine the places to the 2024 Paris Olympics.

There will be 2 male and 2 female spots for rifle; 2 male and 2 female spots for 3-position rifle; 2 male and 2 female spots for air pistol; 2 male 25m rapid fire pistol, 2 female 25m standard pistol and spots for flying discus shooting. There will be a total of 24 spots for the Paris Olympics determined through the 2024 Asian Shooting Championship.
