Patients treated for sleep disorders at the Institute of Mental Health

The female patient has two children, a boy and a girl, who are both well-behaved and good students. Family life is harmonious, without conflict or psychological trauma.

For about a year now, the patient has been sleeping less, at first sleeping 4-5 hours/day, recently sleeping only 1-2 hours/day, not sleeping deeply and only starting to sleep after 2-3 hours when going to bed. The body is always tired, lethargic, headache, making the teacher absent-minded in class and unable to concentrate on work.

"Recently, I have been more tired, irritable for no reason, have a poor appetite, and have lost 2 kg in 2 months. Even the slightest noise wakes me up and I can't fall back asleep. In particular, I am afraid to sleep in the same bed with my husband because he snores. At first, I thought this was the reason for my insomnia, but when I sleep alone, I still can't sleep," the female patient shared with the doctor.

After going to a local clinic and taking medicine for a month without any improvement, and still staying awake many nights, the patient went to the Institute of Mental Health for examination.

Doctor Pham Cong Huan, Department of Psychiatric Treatment, Institute of Mental Health, said that the examination results showed that patient B. had insomnia syndrome, with typical symptoms such as difficulty falling asleep, light sleep, waking up early and not being able to fall back asleep.

Doctors recommend that if you have trouble sleeping for at least 3 months, you should see a doctor.

The patient was treated with specific medication combined with relaxation therapy, exercise, sleep hygiene, and psychotherapy. After 1 month of treatment, the patient is now stable, sleeping better, with appropriate emotional and behavioral responses, and eating better.

Dr. Doan Thi Hue, Deputy Head of the Department of Psychiatric Treatment, Institute of Mental Health, said that sleep disorders often occur with other physical or mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety or cognitive disorders. Sleep disorders are more common in women than men, especially the rate of insomnia in menopausal women is higher than in those in pre-menopause.

If left untreated, sleep disorders can cause many health problems, such as making the patient suffer or reducing work and study efficiency, making it difficult to control behavior... This prolonged condition can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, blood pressure, obesity...

Therefore, when symptoms such as difficulty sleeping appear for at least 3 months; unable to sleep even though there is a chance to sleep; mental disorders coexisting with insomnia... need to see a doctor for timely treatment.
