Passionate about teaching, Nguyen Thi Minh Tam took the entrance exam for mathematics education after graduating from high school. After 4 years of studying hard, in 2008, she graduated from university and was assigned to teach at Tan Thanh High School, a remote, border commune of Tan Hong District, Dong Thap Province. Although the transportation conditions here are difficult, especially during floods, those things make her desire to spread knowledge even more burning.

It was thought that this place would witness the passionate days of youth, but an accident suddenly struck. In 2009, while mobilizing students to go to class, on the way back she was run over by a truck that slid down a hill.

"The pain made me faint. After the accident, I woke up and found out that my left leg was crushed and could not be saved, so I had to amputate my knee. I was an orphan and my mother was old. We depended on each other, so the difficulties were even more difficult," Minh Tam emotionally recalled.

The time after being discharged from the hospital was the most difficult for Ms. Tam. From a person with an enviable height, who had participated in beauty contests, now only able to sit in one place, Minh Tam was in even more pain both physically and mentally.

Rising from the "abyss" of fate

At those times, her mother was her source of encouragement and motivation to continue living and starting everything over. Unable to walk normally, she found joy in books, newspapers and learned about many people with disabilities similar to hers. Some were born disabled, some became disabled after an accident, but they all shared optimism and the will to succeed in life.

"There are many people who are in more difficult situations than me, but they can still do everything. Why can't I?" Putting aside her pain and inferiority complex, Minh Tam accepted to have a prosthetic leg fitted and took her first steps.

She hoped that the prosthetic leg would make walking easier, but things were not as she imagined. The prosthetic leg made contact with her stump and hip joint, rubbing painfully. After many falls, she confidently took her first steps, albeit with a limp.

In addition to exercising, in her free time, Minh Tam does not allow herself to be lazy. She tries hard to exercise, improve her health, gradually regain her spirit, and learn English to improve her knowledge and forget the pain: "Sometimes I feel weak and want to give up, but I know that only effort can help me overcome my fate."

In the 2010-2011 school year, Nguyen Thi Minh Tam was transferred to Thien Ho Duong High School (Cao Lanh City, Dong Thap Province). Minh Tam was assigned to work as an office worker, but her desire to stand in class and teach made her strongly ask the principal to let her teach even just one class.

At first, students and parents wondered "if the teacher has difficulty walking, will she be able to impart good knowledge to the students?" With her determination and talent, teacher Minh Tam has dispelled all doubts and worries of students and parents. In addition, for many years she has been awarded the title of excellent teacher.

Born and raised in a poor family, Minh Tam understands the difficulties, hardships and hardships of poor students who love to study. She did not hesitate to teach them for free. With a compassionate heart, Ms. Tam and her like-minded friends established the Nhat Tam charity group, helping many people in difficult circumstances, people with disabilities, and unfortunate circumstances in life.
