A teacher in Nam Dinh jumped into the river to save a drowning female student.

On the morning of May 26, a clip was circulated on social media recording the moment a person swam very quickly into the Dao River to save a victim struggling in the water. The incident took place at Do Quan Bridge (Tran Hung Dao Ward, Nam Dinh City).

It is known that the person who took brave action is Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai, a physical education teacher at Hong Quang Primary School.

Just think how to save people quickly

Ms. Mai shared that at around 6:30 a.m. that same day, she and her mother were on their way home from the hospital to take care of a sick person. When they reached the middle of Do Quan bridge, they saw many people standing on the bridge, so she stopped to ask and was told that someone had just fallen into the water.

At that moment, without thinking much, she told her mother: "I have to jump in to save him."

“At first, I intended to climb over the bridge railing to jump down, but at that time the victim had been swept away quite far, and even if I jumped down, I might not have enough strength to swim out to save him. Seeing the stairs from the top of the bridge down to the nearby dike, I immediately took the stairs down, ran along the dike to the location where the victim had been swept away, then jumped into the river, swam out to pull the victim to shore. At that time, all I could think about was saving the person as quickly as possible,” Ms. Mai recalled.

Thanks to her years of swimming experience, Ms. Mai quickly approached the victim and brought him safely to shore. After asking and encouraging him, Ms. Mai and the locals brought the victim home.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Khanh, Principal of Hong Quang Primary School, said that Ms. Mai is an exemplary teacher, has many achievements in teaching, and is also a winner of many high awards in swimming.

Immediately after receiving the information, this morning the school's Board of Directors visited teacher Mai's house to encourage and inquire about her health.

"Although this morning, she felt very tired after two sleepless nights due to family matters, when she saw a female student in distress, Ms. Mai did not hesitate to jump into the river and swim as fast as she could to help. Her brave act was a noble act, very much appreciated," said the Principal of Hong Quang Primary School.
