On December 5, the Council for Recognition of Traditional Occupations, Craft Villages, and Traditional Craft Villages of Dien Bien province organized an assessment and recognized four occupations of the Xa Phang and H'mong ethnic groups in Tua Chua district as traditional occupations.
The Council recognized four professions, including: Making shoes and costumes of the Xa Phang people in Ta Sin Thang village (Ta Sin Thang commune); making Khen of the H'Mong people in Song Un village (Muong Bang commune); Embroidery and brocade weaving of the H'Mong people in Ta La Cao village; and forging knives and farming tools of the H'Mong people in De Dang village (Sinh Phinh commune).
According to the Council's assessment, all four of the above occupations meet 3/3 criteria, including: The occupation has been present in the locality for over 50 years and is currently continuing to develop (as of the time of the request for recognition); the occupation creates products with national cultural identity and the occupation is associated with the name of one or more artisans or the name of the craft village.
Mr. Lo Van Tien, Vice Chairman of Dien Bien Provincial People's Committee, suggested that Tua Chua district study and support, creating the most favorable conditions for people in villages to develop traditional occupations; annually re-evaluate the activities of traditional occupations and craft villages in the area. At the same time, continue to promote propaganda work so that each person appreciates and is responsible for preserving and promoting. Artisans and people in villages with recognized traditional occupations need to continue to preserve and develop traditional occupations in the area better.
