A Facebook post has advertised a recipe for mixing fresh milk with coffee powder to treat dark circles under the eyes - a common cosmetic problem.

The main factors that cause dark circles, also known as periorbital hyperpigmentation, are oxidative stress and poor blood circulation. Other factors include lack of sleep, aging, frequent eye rubbing, allergies, excessive screen time, low water intake, and smoking.

On September 11, THIP, an Indian health information and fact-checking platform, said the information about homemade recipes that can treat dark circles is incorrect.

According to medical experts, although coffee and fresh milk can help reduce dark circles temporarily, brighten the skin slightly and provide moisture, this mixture cannot replace medical care based on scientific evidence.

There are many causes of dark circles under the eyes, including genetics, thinning of the skin, blockage of blood vessels, and aging. Therefore, it cannot be treated with a single, unproven, home remedy. The cause must be clearly identified and a long-term treatment method must be followed.

In addition, prolonged or improper use of the mixture of coffee powder and fresh milk can cause irritation or worsen dark circles. In particular, people with sensitive skin should avoid trying homemade recipes.

Dermatologist Rashi Soni, of Rashi Hospital in India, says that while coffee and milk have some benefits for the skin, they do not help cure the underlying cause. For best results, patients should see a dermatologist for a proper skin care regimen under the supervision of a specialist.

Dermatologists can also advise on lifestyle modifications such as getting enough sleep, applying sunscreen, and controlling allergies in conjunction with clinical interventions.
