Strengthening and developing the traditional friendship between Vietnam and Cambodia

The people of Ho Chi Minh City have always attached importance to and actively contributed to the traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation between the governments and people of Vietnam and Cambodia. That was the affirmation of Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Nam, Chairman of the Vietnam - Cambodia Friendship Association of Ho Chi Minh City at the meeting to celebrate the 72nd anniversary of the Independence Day of the Kingdom of Cambodia (November 9, 1953 - November 9, 2025), organized by the City Union of Friendship Organizations on the morning of November 6.

Attending the event were: Representatives of the Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Committee in Ho Chi Minh City; Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the City; Vietnam - Cambodia Friendship Association of the City; representatives of a number of departments, branches and units; former experts, Vietnamese volunteer soldiers in Cambodia and a large number of Cambodian students studying in the area.

According to Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Nam, Vietnam and Cambodia are two close neighbors with a traditional friendship, good cooperation, and solidarity in supporting each other in the cause of national liberation. Today, the leaders and people of the two countries are striving to consolidate and strengthen solidarity and friendship, work together to build and develop the socio- economy , and closely coordinate in international forums to bring the traditional neighborly friendship between the two countries to a new level, for the benefit of the people of the two countries.

Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Nam said that in 2025, the Association coordinated to organize a variety of activities to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam - Cambodia Friendship Association of Ho Chi Minh City, such as: The 46th anniversary of the victory of the Southwest border war and the victory of the Cambodian army and people over the genocidal regime (January 7, 1979 - January 7, 2025); Vietnam - Cambodia Business Forum; sponsoring 32 Cambodian students; organizing for Cambodian students and communities in the City to celebrate the traditional New Year, participate in experiential activities, learn about Vietnamese history and culture; coordinating with the Tam Viet Medical Group to organize medical examinations, treatment, and give gifts to nearly 2,000 poor people in Cambodia...

The President of the Vietnam - Cambodia Friendship Association of Ho Chi Minh City emphasized that, together with the people of the whole country, the people of the City will continue to make efforts to contribute to the successful implementation of the direction and content of the Vietnam - Cambodia cooperation relationship affirmed by the leaders of the two countries: "Good neighbors, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation, long-term sustainability" to contribute to the cause of peace , stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.

Thanking the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Friendship Organizations for organizing the commemoration ceremony, Mr. Chan Sorykan, Consul General of Cambodia in the City, shared the significance of the milestone of November 9, 1953 in the history of Cambodia's development as well as the ups and downs in history; expressing gratitude for the wholehearted, pure and timely help of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers to help the Cambodian people escape the genocide.

According to the Cambodian Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City, currently, Cambodia and Vietnam have made progress in bilateral relations in many areas such as: Trade, diplomacy, politics, society, people-to-people exchange in a stronger, deeper and more comprehensive direction, in line with the spirit of "good neighborliness, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation, long-term sustainability". In 2024, the trade turnover between Cambodia and Vietnam will reach more than 12 billion USD, making Vietnam the third largest trading partner of Cambodia and the largest among ASEAN member countries.

Mr. Chan Sorykan pledged that the Cambodian Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City will continue to contribute to promoting the good traditional friendship and supporting the promotion of economic, trade and investment cooperation between the two countries to achieve greater achievements in 2025 and the following years; especially in connecting and supporting the promotion of economic and trade relations between businesses of the two countries, towards completing the target of bilateral turnover between the two countries reaching 20 billion USD in the near future.
