According to Sputnik news agency, it is expected that about 33,000 soldiers, 30 ships and 250 aircraft of the Japan Self-Defense Forces, along with 12,000 soldiers, 10 ships and 120 aircraft of the US military will participate in Sharp Sword-25.
The large-scale exercise represents increased military cooperation between Japan and the United States amid rising geopolitical tensions in the region.
The 10-day exercise, which begins on October 23, will take place at military bases of both US and Japanese forces, as well as at several civilian airports and ports.
Although the Japanese Defense Ministry did not specify which civilian facilities would be used, according to recent government guidelines, there are 28 civilian infrastructure facilities that can be used for military purposes.
NHK quoted the ministry as saying that at Kumamoto and Nagasaki airports, there will be take-off and landing exercises for fighter jets. Notably, for the first time, the Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft will conduct exercises at Naha airport.
In addition, troop transport exercises will take place at Tomakomai and Kushiro ports on Japan's northern island of Hokkaido, while refueling exercises will be held at Ishigaki port in Okinawa.
There are also plans to practice transporting wounded people from remote islands in the southwest to hospitals on Japan's main island of Honshu.
