Extortion, a former reporter sentenced to 7 years in prison

On May 25, the People's Court of Minh Hoa District ( Quang Binh ) concluded the first instance trial and sentenced Phan Manh Chi (43 years old, Hoa Hop commune, Minh Hoa district) to 7 years in prison for the crime of extortion.

Defendant Chi was sentenced to 7 years in prison for the crime of extortion.

According to the indictment, defendant Chi worked for a magazine. Around the beginning of 2022, Chi learned that Mr. D.TD (a leader of Tuyen Hoa district) had committed land violations, so he called and threatened him many times to appropriate 300 million VND.

Specifically, defendant Chi proactively called Mr. D. 17 times and made direct appointments to meet him 3 times to threaten and intimidate him mentally.

On May 25, after 2 days of first instance trial, Tuyen Hoa District People's Court sentenced defendant Chi to 7 years in prison for the crime of extortion, according to Clause 3, Article 170, Penal Code.
