In the middle of May 2025, under the bright sunlight of summer, we were present in Khon Tau village, Lien Hoi commune, in a 2-hectare anise forest, Mr. Hoang Van Khim was busy taking care of his family's flock of chickens under the forest canopy. While showing us around the model, Mr. Khim told us about the opportunities that led to this economic model. Accordingly, in 1983, following the sacred call of the Fatherland, the young man joined the army, and in 1986, Mr. Khim was discharged and returned to his hometown.
Mr. Khim confided: When I first returned to my hometown, my family's life was very difficult, with only a few fields of rice that were not enough to eat, and no stable income. Not resigned to poverty, I always struggled, tried to research and learn to develop the family economy. In 1987, I borrowed 30 million VND from the District Social Policy Bank Transaction Office, along with the money I had saved to invest in growing star anise and raising fattened cattle and buffaloes.
At first, due to his lack of experience in raising livestock, Mr. Khim encountered many difficulties and unstable output. In 1992, he switched to raising chickens on a small scale of only a few dozen. To gain more knowledge about raising livestock, he researched chicken raising techniques on the Internet and learned from effective raising models. In addition, he also actively participated in training courses on transferring science and technology organized by the district's professional agencies to gain more knowledge in raising livestock. Thanks to that, his family's livestock raising gradually developed, and he boldly increased his herd every year.
Mr. Khim added: Realizing the potential of the family's available hilly forest land, which is favorable for raising chickens under the canopy of the anise forest, I took advantage of the forest area around the house to raise chickens and invested in spacious, airy, and hygienic barns. In order for the chickens to grow healthily, I pay special attention to disease prevention and control. Thanks to that, the chickens have good resistance, are easy to raise, and rarely get sick. Up to now, the family has always maintained a flock of more than 300 chickens, and after selling them, they are divided into groups to raise more. On average, each year, the family sells from 300 to 350 meat chickens to the market.
In addition, on average, the family earns 1.5 - 2 tons of star anise each year, with a price of 30 to 35 million VND/ton. With quickness, diligence, daring to think, daring to do, from the model of raising and growing star anise, the family has an income of 250 to 300 million VND/year. Thanks to that, up to now, the family's life has gradually stabilized and become more prosperous.
With a stable income from livestock farming and to effectively utilize livestock waste, in 2021, Mr. Khim's family invested in planting 300 more grapefruit trees and 200 dragon fruit trees. The garden has grown very well so far, yielding from 1 to 2 quintals of fruit each year.
Mr. Ngo Van Da, Chairman of Lien Hoi Commune People's Committee commented: Not only is he good at economics, over the years, Mr. Hoang Van Khim has always been willing to share his experiences in farming and raising livestock with people who want to visit and learn from his family's model, so he is always trusted and loved by everyone. Along with that, he always complies well with the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's policies and laws. He deserves to be a shining example of a veteran in economic development for people in the commune to learn and follow.
With his industrious, hard-working, daring nature and his constant efforts in the family economic development movement, in 2025, Mr. Khim was honored to receive a certificate of merit from the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee for having an effective economic development model, contributing to hunger eradication, poverty reduction and job creation for local workers.
