Received proposal to join BRICS but Kazakhstan is still "considering carefully"

On October 16, Kazakhstan's presidential press secretary Berik Uali said that President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev had received a proposal to join the BRICS group of leading emerging economies , but Astana currently has no plans.

Specifically, the President of Kazakhstan was invited to attend the expanded BRICS Summit held in Kazan on October 22-24 as a guest.

President Tokayev plans to speak at the conference on October 24, Mr. Uali said.

"Kazakhstan is following the development of BRICS with interest," press secretary Uali stressed.

Astana backed the group's leaders' call to build a just and democratic world order, “without the hegemony of any superpower”.

He added that President Tokayev and the relevant ministries are “carefully considering” the issue of joining BRICS from the perspective of Kazakhstan’s interests. However, at the moment and most likely in the near future, Kazakhstan will not apply for BRICS membership.

According to Mr. Uali, Kazakhstan considers the United Nations to be a universal and irreplaceable organization, in which it is necessary to discuss all issues related to the construction of a just world order.
