The United Nations (UN) special envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen on December 14 called on major powers to do their part to prevent the collapse of Syria's vital institutions following the overthrow of leader Bashar al-Assad, as diplomats gathered in Jordan for a conference on the crisis.
Senior diplomats from Arab countries, Türkiye, the European Union (EU) and the United States met in the Jordanian Red Sea resort city of Aqaba, less than a week after Islamist-led rebels toppled Mr Assad.
In a meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Geir Pedersen supported a "credible and inclusive" political process to form a new government. "We need to ensure that state institutions do not collapse and that humanitarian aid is delivered as quickly as possible. If we can achieve that, perhaps this is a new opportunity for the Syrian people," Pedersen said.
Meanwhile, Mr. Blinken emphasized that the UN "plays an important role" in providing humanitarian assistance and protecting minority communities in Syria.
UN humanitarian agencies said on December 13 that looting and shortages of staff and medicines were forcing some health care facilities in Syria to close. Meanwhile, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) released a report noting that thousands of Syrians have begun returning from Lebanon through the Masnaa border crossing and other border crossings. According to UNHCR, more than 13 million Syrians have been forced to flee their homes during the 14-year civil war and crisis in Syria.
