Hue Imperial City submerged in floodwaters, Deputy Prime Minister requests protection of relics

On the morning of October 31, Deputy Prime Minister Mai Van Chinh inspected the flood situation at Hue Imperial City and several relic sites after heavy rains that lasted for many days.

According to the report of Hue City People's Committee, flood water in the Imperial Citadel area was at times 0.3 - 0.5m deep, many other constructions such as Gia Long, Minh Mang, Thieu Tri, Duc Duc tombs were 1 - 1.7m deep. The Poetry Library - where precious documents are stored - was also flooded more than 1m deep.

Authorities, staff of the Hue Monuments Conservation Center and local residents have urgently pumped water, reinforced with sandbags and flood-proof materials to protect the monument and ensure safety for visitors.

By the morning of October 31, most of the relic sites had been evacuated, and relic staff were mobilized to clear mud, clean up, and check for damage.

At Ngo Mon area, Deputy Prime Minister Mai Van Chinh acknowledged the proactive and timely spirit of the locality and conservation team in responding to natural disasters and limiting damage to heritage.

He emphasized that the Hue Monuments Complex is a world heritage site, so protecting royal architectural works in extreme weather conditions should be a top priority - especially drainage systems, waterproofing, foundation reinforcement and preservation of artifacts.

He requested Hue City and the Hue Monuments Conservation Center to review all relics vulnerable to floods and rains, and develop long-term response plans to adapt to climate change.

He also requested units to urgently overcome the consequences, drain water, clean the environment to soon reopen to welcome guests again, in the spirit of "where the water recedes, clean up there", while ensuring safety for the task force and people when the weather is still complicated.
