During this year's rainy season, residents living along the coast of An Hai village, Dong Son commune, Quang Ngai province, are apprehensive about the threat of landslides.

According to local residents, due to the impact of recent storms, successive large waves have repeatedly battered and destroyed the section of the seawall that was originally intended to protect against waves.

In many places, erosion has encroached right up to people's houses. The signs of landslides are still fresh, with scattered soil and sand, and broken bamboo stakes, gabions, and sandbags lying scattered after successive high tides.

For the past few months, Mrs. Vo Thi Thoa (64 years old, residing in An Hai village) has been living in constant fear as the sea waves have encroached upon her family's small house. "Having lived here since childhood, I've never witnessed such a high tide and severe erosion as now. The waves are very strong, hitting the house directly. Every time the tide rises, the whole family has to prepare for evacuation," Mrs. Thoa explained.

To protect their land and home, Mrs. Thoa's family spent over 120 million VND building a concrete embankment, alongside a secondary embankment made of bamboo and gabions. However, recent storms have completely destroyed the secondary embankment, with the bamboo stakes and stones being swept away into the sea.

Not only Mrs. Thoa's family, but many other households in An Hai village also contributed money to buy bamboo stakes, sacks, and rocks to build temporary embankments to hold onto the remaining land. However, these makeshift structures only lasted for a short time, because the destructive power of the sea waves was too terrible.

Mr. Phan Dinh Chi, Chairman of the People's Committee of Dong Son commune, said that during the peak of storms and heavy rains, the commune's local forces are always on duty 24/7 to proactively evacuate people to safe places in case of emergencies, minimizing risks to human lives.

According to Mr. Chi, tidal erosion in the residential area of An Hai village is becoming increasingly serious, exceeding the local authorities' and residents' ability to cope. The Dong Son Commune People's Committee has requested the Quang Ngai Provincial People's Committee and relevant departments and agencies to conduct an early survey and invest in the construction of a coastal erosion control embankment in An Hai village, approximately 420 meters long, with an estimated total cost of around 20 billion VND.
