Director Huu Luan (Le Huu Luan) received his PhD in cultural management on November 18, 2025.
On the afternoon of November 18, director Huu Luan (Le Huu Luan) received a Doctorate in Culture and Arts from the Vietnam National Institute of Culture, Arts, Sports and Tourism. This is a personal academic milestone and a vivid testament to a journey of study and research full of determination, overcoming harsh challenges of director Huu Luan.
Huu Luan - From the pain of having his Master's degree revoked
Director Huu Luan (former director of the Center for Performing Arts and Cinema in Ho Chi Minh City) is an MC loved by listeners of the Voice of the People of Ho Chi Minh City with the program "Golden Rice". His journey began in the vibrant years of the Southern theater scene. Born and raised in Ho Chi Minh City, he was passionate about performing arts early on, attending specialized training classes and teaching at the Stage Arts School 2 (now the University of Theatre and Cinema in Ho Chi Minh City) in the 1980s.
With his talent and intelligence, he quickly became a talented artist in many fields of art. In 1998, he successfully defended his Master's thesis in Culture at Hanoi University of Culture, opening the door for more in-depth research in the field of art.
However, fate tested him harshly. In 2010, the Ministry of Education and Training decided to revoke his Master's degree for administrative reasons: he lacked a regular university degree in Stage Directing. This decision not only canceled his PhD exam results but also pushed him into a spiral of prolonged legal battles. "Those were the most difficult and worrying days of my life," he shared.
Having his degree revoked in the middle of his career, he faced doubts from colleagues, pressure from public opinion and personal pain when his passion for academics was overshadowed. Undeterred, he appealed to the Ministry of Education and Training. The struggle lasted more than a year, with support from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (now the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism). By September 2010, the Ministry recognized the value of the first specialized training class (1982-1985) that he attended, paving the way for historical correction.
Unforgettable memories of director Huu Luan
"I remember the articles published in the Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper at that time became a beacon of light, speaking out strongly to protect my rights during the complaint process" - director Huu Luan shared.
He said that since May 2010, through the articles "Graduating without a degree (?!)" and "Huu Luan complains to the Ministry of Education and Training", the newspaper Nguoi Lao Dong has described in detail his arduous learning journey at the School of Stage Arts II (now the University of Theater and Cinema in Ho Chi Minh City), from the 1981-1984 specialized class recognized as equivalent to university, to successfully defending his Master's degree in Cultural Management in 1998 at the Hanoi University of Culture.

Director Huu Luan (Le Huu Luan) received his PhD in cultural management on November 18, 2025.
Newspaper articles at that time interviewed witnesses such as director NSUT Hoa Ha, journalist Viet Ha and many other directors talking about the learning process with director Huu Luan, emphasizing the absurdity of revoking the diploma due to "system errors" - from the Ministry of Culture to training schools - instead of individual errors.
Thanks to the influence of the press and public opinion, the Ministry of Education and Training reconsidered, leading to the decision to recognize the value of specialized training classes just a few months later.
"For me, receiving my PhD today is not only a personal victory but also a lesson in equity in education. From here, I will not stop but continue my new research journey with a burning desire more than ever, which is to contribute my efforts to the cultural and artistic career of Ho Chi Minh City and the country" - director Huu Luan said.
He successfully completed his PhD research at the Vietnam Institute of Arts, Culture, Sports and Tourism, majoring in Cultural Management (code 9229042), under the dedicated guidance of Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Minh Thai and Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Hoai Son.
The thesis topic "Managing public art units under the autonomous mechanism at the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Performing Arts and Cinema" not only reflects his practical experience but also makes a profound contribution to the theory of contemporary Vietnamese cultural management.
Huu Luan inspires learning for the young generation
After a period of hard work, on December 25, 2024, he successfully defended his thesis at the Institute level, receiving 100% consensus from the evaluation board - a testament to the scientific value and feasibility of the research.
Director Huu Luan shared: "Studying and being passionate about research is my mission." The journey he has gone through is a source of inspiration for many generations of researchers, especially in the field of culture and arts.
In the context of the country promoting cultural autonomy, his contributions will be a valuable foundation, contributing to building a more professional and creative Vietnamese art scene.
Dr. Le Huu Luan – Director Huu Luan is a symbol of determination and talent. His journey reminds the young generation of artists to always light the fire of passion for learning to serve the country.
