In the summer of 2015, De Gea seemed certain to leave Old Trafford to join Real Madrid on the final day of the transfer window. But the deal fell through at the last minute due to paperwork problems. The two clubs later blamed each other for the delay.
When asked about the incident by Italian site Cronache Di Spogliatoio last week, De Gea said: "I will clarify everything when my career ends."
"When something doesn't happen, there's definitely a reason behind it," the former MU goalkeeper added.
However, for De Gea, that outcome does not make him regret. "The transfer was very close, but in the end it did not go through. For me, it turned out to be good because Manchester is home," the Spanish goalkeeper affirmed.
De Gea joined MU from Atletico Madrid in 2011, becoming an icon in the "Red Devils" goal for more than a decade. He won the Premier League title in the 2012/2013 season, along with the FA Cup (2016), Europa League (2017), and two Carabao Cups (2017, 2023).
After leaving Old Trafford in the summer of 2023, De Gea took a year off before returning to Fiorentina as a free agent. He revealed that this break brought a lot of value: "It was one of the best years of my life. I felt tired both physically and mentally and it was time to stop, recover and come back stronger."
De Gea revealed that he had received offers from several other English clubs, but in his heart, playing for another English team was impossible.
"I just want to play for Manchester United. That's where I grew up, where I spent most of my career and had a very good career there," he said.
De Gea, 34, kept 11 clean sheets in 42 appearances for Fiorentina in the 2024/25 season. He has just signed a new contract with Fiorentina, valid until June 2028.
